. Lav Ams so more going in.I think that about takes me to MARCH hatching!~~~~AH SPRING!!!!!

Rox, last night after her being dry I could take a look- her legs look good, but her feet look turned under. I massaged then kind of straitening them out. This morning 1 foot looks good, she can stand of it- the other is still turned under. How do I put a brace on her foot? and what would I use??? And of course this is a silkie, so she has the 5 toes and geez they have big feet! She seems very strong & has pooped- so that's good.
There are some threads up about braces and shoes
.One they use is duct tape and cardboard i think .They put a piece on top of the toes laying flat and then bottom like a shoe sort of .and leave on a couple days then check and if needed leave longer should fix her up but gotta do it fast before 3 days old or the bones will set how they are.. GOOD LUCK !! .

TY blueflag, & to you too!

I got to thinking about the silkie chicks that died w/o pipping the other day- so I read some articles about it & they suggested if you're using a styrofoam bator to have one of those things that checks temp & humidity. I bought one today, & guess what? The thermometer that came with my bator is 5 degrees off! And until now I had no way to "know" my humidity- which accord to this thing was also too low. I have it corrected now, hope it's not too late for all the eggs I have in there! I use the big styrofoam bator for the eggs until lockdown, then move them to my brinsea mini advance for the last few days. Just wanted to mention this in case any of you are using a styrofoam bator & didn't know about this kind of issue...
YOu know i have had worse than i should hatches lately and late hatches
My Genesis's temp was off !!
Bottom of the thing was only 95.5 .!The bator reading said 99.5 and set at 100 so cant trust any of them i guess.
I have raised it to 99 now but had to set it at 102 to do it.
I have been told by more tha one person to check them every time and you need a FEW good therms to do that so you know the temp is right.Makre sure you check that new one against another that works well so you i know it is working also there is a way you can test it somethign about putting it in ice until it gets to zero which it should
Ask Brookhaven she knows how to do that. I forget exactly .She is smart puts 4 therms in the bottom of her bator (glass bulb scientific ) so the reading should all be the same.

Just placed a batch in the incubator last Sunday, 1/27. 7 Lavendar/self blue Ameraucanas and 6 French Black Copper Marans. I am so worried for them as they were shipped and went through some pretty frigid temps on their way here. Excited, though!

And now we wait ...

Good luck everyone and happy hatching!

Yeah Holly these low temps arent good and shipped anyway ...guh .I always seem to set shipped and low hatch rates but what can you do?. I love the LAv Ams. I have 3 and just bought more eggs .Also have lav Orps.... Into lavs.So pretty

I'm new to all of this, but my understanding from reading up on the genetics is the hen has to be from a sex linked breed. When you use an EE Roo with the sex linked breed hen then the first generation of olive eggers will be sex linked. It sounds like second generation they will no longer be sex linked.

I guess we will see, assuming I get the incubating right.

I'm having a pretty rough night tonight and very upset. My Maran hen was pretty badly plucked by one of the Roos today. I started this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/740888/injured-hen If anyone has any advice on treating her I would really appreciate it.

Apparently I should not have been joking about claws and spurs crossed.
Sorry...Wish i did.... havent had that much experience with injuries. the sex link thing is a good idea especially if you sell them ppl want hens for the most part and some dont like to get chicks and find roos they have to get rid of.City ppl especially no roos allowed!...

Good luck.I dont know what to do with her wash it and put on neosporin I would keep her by her self or the rest mightkill her. They gang up on hurt birds especially if they see blood
I do see a jacket thing advertised they put on them to keep the roo from hurting them.

I set 15 eggs yesterday afternoon - due date of 2/20. I made my own bator so I'm hoping I have some luck with it.

I went out and gathered eggs from my coop yesterday. I have no clue what I will be hatching out. I have two roo's, one BO and one BR. The BO is my head gentleman but the BR does get frisky when he's not looking.

As for the hen's - I have some BR, some RIR, two Black sex link's, three buff sex link's and a few EE's. I only set 2 EE eggs because that was all I had and really......I wasn't so sure I wanted any more EE's at the moment.

I'm working out the kinks with my humidity but the temp seems to be holding well at 99. My humidity was up to 76% so I had to change out my sponge - now it's hanging in the mid 50's so hopefully this does the trick. :)

I'm planning on giving 50 eggs to the school next door in a few weeks for their 2nd grade classes to hatch out - I wanted to make sure I could get some to hatch out on my own at first. They had a horrible time last year - 14 chicks out of 72 eggs and not all 14 made it. :( I am hoping to give them local eggs and they'll have better luck this time around.

Hello everyone! I am fairly new to byc !

I am on lockdown too. Due to hatch any minute! I am so stressed. This is my first time any only two eggs. They are from my RIR and my silkie Emmit. I also have 8 more due to hatch on the 7 th!
Oh wow, good luck! Is it day 21??
