FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Soooooo, I just candled. It's day 7. I have 16 with solid veining. I even saw movement in 1!!! He was doing the backstroke!! I have one I think has a blood ring, I will need to do more research to make sure and I have 1 that is infertile. I am bummed about the infertile one because it was an EE egg that was a very very unique cream color. I am going to leave the 2 questionables until day 10 and ill candle again to be sure. The one I suspect to be a blood ring was an extremely large egg that I probably shouldn't have set to begin with, it was large enough to be a double yolk.

But I am totally pumped about my results!! This means that every single one is developing!! In my homemade incubator to boot!!

I was so worried this being my first attempt with reputable eggs(last attempt was with store bought and all but one were infertile and I had one quitter)

Make that 11 on mine, I just candled them again and found a crack in one of the Leghorn cross eggs. Being a first timer, curiosity got the better of me and I cracked it open. Thank goodness I had the presence of mind to do it in a closed plastic bag. Somehow the smell was still getting through though. YUCK. Hope that's the last of the rotten ones! 4 had moving chicks in them, including one that I could see its heartbeat! How cool! About 4 more had visible veins, and the rest were just very dark. I do have one that has a lot of pores in it but it was one with a moving chick. Hope it stays that way!

I have to ask, when I see that you have leghorn mixes..did you by chance get them from DMRippy? I got some from her, and had a great hatch. They have grown, and now lay like a leghorn. Not as big, but just as often!! Here is a picture of one with my Wheaten A. in a nest box.

Even if you didn't get them from DMRippy, then all I can say is, those leghorn mixes are the best!

Hi Everyone,
I am setting today........and happy to have hatchmates to chat with....................

At least 3 Serama ( hoping for 4 if the hens cooperate)
How ever many BLRW's layed today
and maybe a few mixed...? =)
Have not hatched in about 10 months ,except for broodies) so really excited to be up and going again.
Also have a broody Serama hen and another with 2 beautiful 3 week old chicks.

Recieved some eggs in the mail yesterday. The lady from the PO called me about 6:00 AM.
She was upset. The box had been soaked with water and looked like someone sat it.
You could not even read any writing including the address...but she gave an educated guess they were mine.
Thank Goodness for small communities..................

Amazingly(and beacuse of great packing)the eggs were in tact. I have not checked the air sacks.............
Good luck all.......................
You and I are only a few days apart on some of mine. I have some EE's set..and some OE's..oh, I do have three barred rock going into lock down on Tues. I hope. I have no idea what is going on with so much loss there. I was talking with my DH today about it. I said this is the worst loss I've had in years. So sad..I want a girl! I hope they aren't all little cockerels!
Good luck on your mangled wet package! I've had that happen. I also had great packaged eggs, and had a great hatch. Here's what my package looked like, and someone said, it looks like an elephant sat on it. Not one broken egg. :)) Shipped from the mid west.

Here are the eggs from inside..nice packing job to the person I got them from!

Welcome to the hatching Chickydee! Good luck on your hatch. You're a week behind me. I set 7 silkie eggs last Saturday.

It makes me wonder if some of those PO people intentionally smash packages listed as "fragile". Glad all the eggs turned out ok for both of you!

Day 7 here too... or due to hatch on Feb 23rd. :) I candled my eggs (7 silkies) a couple days ago and all 7 had started, and even saw the heartbeats in them. I love when they're doing the backstroke! LOL. Watch your "blood ring" one. I had one in my last hatch that looked like what I thought was a blood ring (and the other eggs didn't have it). I decided to let it go a few more days anyways, and the ring went away... the chick hatched and ended up being the best chick in the batch. Glad I left it in there! Good luck with your hatch!

That's awesome. I think I would still have to wait the longest possible amount of time to give up on eggs!

Thanks :). After doing a bit more research I am almost positive it is a blood ring. It is a ring that circles the entire egg that about 1/8-3/16" thick that looks kind of cloudy/smeared. Definitely not veins and it is very distinguishable. I'm not going to give up on him yet though!
