FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

So here is the little Serama chick that hatched on Feb. 1st. I haven't named him/her yet. Suggestions anyone?

He/she is adorable! How big is she? I hear seramas are not even twice the size of a quarter when they first hatch

I put 4 barred rock eggs under my silkie broody named Mel just a few hours ago I've had chickens for a year now and have brooded many day olds but this will be my first time hatching chicks. I'm so excited!!

Just candled and there are a bunch of little ones bouncin around in them!! I use my cell phone flash light to candle with and it works great!

Your one chick .....From experience if you get her out of the chair and just;let her on her own she will just scrabble around on her stomach and ruin her good leg.too

.I had one died just a few days ago 6 or 7 months old I did the same with her Her leg had been crossed across her body underneath but one leg was good.
i tried 20 things and had her in a chair food/ water tapped to it but she could dangle her feet and look around .Then she outgrew it and i couldnt find something else that worked for her and she seemed so peaceful NOT in the chair however her 6 months of life she spend in a box all alone scrabbling around and only joy was food or when i came in held her up in the air to "fly"
She would excercise her wings. at least for a few minutes a few times a day. and get to look at all the other chicks in other cages. She couldnt see them in her box ...Had a mirror for a friend in with her. .She got thinner and thinner but ate well ... finally died .
It was sad.
The leg and foot things happen a lot it seems to me to assisted. A lot of mine had some issue that were assisted.

I guess natures way if they cant get out they shouldnt sometimes.

So if its just her leg...i think i would go ahead with the chair. although ti seems cruel it may be her only chance at a normal life.

They say on here when they are not with other chickens they eventually die
Put them with others abnormal the others will peck them badly or kill them.. ..Just bad all around

So Cull them ?or let them live what life they have? Not sure whats right...

Well, our second chick in the chair didn't make it. She stopped eating & drinking, and wouldn't even take it from my syringe/dropper. She got rather sickly, and so DH put her down a few hours ago.

The last 2 chickie-doodles are doing nicely. Here are some pics:







The bigger one is "MoMo" (on the left in each pic), and our little figher is "Mini". I had changed Mini's leg hobbles into a thin rubber band this morning, and she was doing so well, that I tried her without the band tonight... She's walking and standing very well, and evenly distributing her weight between both legs nicely. Phew! I'll keep them on the rubber grip for another night, or two, to make sure she's for sure steady on her feet, and then remove it from the pine shavings that are underneath and let them play and scratch around in there.

And... so I can go through this all over again - I set 8 more silkie eggs in the incubator on Saturday. The eggs were anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks old, plus I think 1 or 2 might have froze outside on the really cold days before we collected it. So, I don't know how many (if any) will start, but in a couple days I'll take out all the duds. I really hope this batch doesn't end up with a high percentage of leg issues. My neighbor (bless her heart) insists the slipped tendon is caused by not turning the eggs enough. Well... I have an automatic turned set to turn every 45 minutes. I'm guessing that wasn't it, but I'm sure going to keep an eagle eye on that turner and make sure they're turning properly. The silkie eggs are smaller, so maybe they're slipping a bit? Also, I'm going to keep the humidity regulated better. I am using the Brinsea Mini Advance, and I think it was running a little high on humidity with 1 chamber filled with water. I'll be adjusting that as well. Hopefully this time is better **please please please, deep breath**. --- 2 1/2 weeks to go.

I'm right with you!!! Sorry about your little one, the other 2 look great! Keep up with the bands, they do work- my little Sugar Peeps is out of the boots & brack, walking& running perfectly! Going to be posting pics in a min

Your cell ph is doing a great job! That egg looks nice with the veining!
