FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

:tongue  back @ ya!
Seriously, good 4 you! We all know how nerve wracking it is & you are just doing your best. It's also one of the reasons for a group like this- advise, support, ppl to cry & laugh with AND tie us to trees when needed :lau

I also have a lg stryo that I use for days 1-18. I did however get it @ a good deal right b/4 Christmas on ebay. It was a pkg deal that included the fan kit, turner kit & "bonus" candler. I think it was less than $80 w/ free shipping. They were selling like hot cakes! When you can, it might be worth it to you to add a fan kit to yours.

I dont know what I am more addicted to, this thread or checking my eggs!! Out waiting in the pick up line at my kids school and since I cant check my eggs I am on here!! I may need a 12 step program before this is over...or another incubator full of eggs lol!!

Ay! We are all momma bears (and in is case momma hens!) here with us southern girls! I may burn the house down, but my babies won't freeze! That's for sure! Ha!!!

well even deeper south ( Louisiana ) you'd make your house 'catch-far' & you gotta say it just like that! I am cracking up over here

Hey guys not sure if you remember me since I posted several pages ago but now I'm back with a question. I have eggs under a broody and the weather the past few days has been awful! Cold temps, wind, and rain. Do you think this will ruin my hatch?

That's actually a self-blue d'uccle. She's full grown now and was a TSC special from last year. Here is a pic of her now.

OMG how cute is she!!! So that IS what I have. DH was told the 2 he got @ the feed store were blue or porcelain d'uccle. I assumed it was porcelain b/c I had not seen or heard about the blue. I've been looking for pics of chicks that look like mine but only saw porcelain chicks & they are not as blue or lav. colored as mine. When I saw your avatar it looks the closest to mine I've seen. I'm so happy to know what my babies are now!

If the broody is protected from the elements (in a hen box or broody box) she will keep the eggs just fine. You would actually be surprised how much warmth she gives those eggs.

Thank you and YAY!!

I was like you except all I was told was she was a bantam...I searched and searched to figure out what she was. BTW her name is Lil Bit, she was the only bantam I had in with about 10 other normal sized chicks and she held her own with the big kids and still does. Congrats on your babies! I have more pics and better pics of her in my photos on here.

She is in the coop nestled in a pile of shavings. It's a 3 sided coop so I'm thinking about putting some weather plastic over the part infront of her. Thanks for answering

My little runt chickie "Mini" has been dealing with a pasty butt! Grr.

DH is picking up some plain yogurt today on his way home from work. That, the ACV in the water, and maybe a tiny pinch of ground oatmeal in with the chick feed... ? I hope it helps. This chick is a fighter, so I'm sure he'll fight through this as well. My only concern, is maybe he's got something going on with the back door that's causing some problems in addition to typical chickie pasty butt. I'm saying, the reason I'm almost positive little Mini is a roo... is because he was so small and frail when he first hatched. And his vent was a kind of swollen and like inside out at first.

Pretty sure I was able to vent sex him, but mother nature did the work, not me! But it makes me wonder if it didn't cause him problems (in addition to everything else!).

He's still quite lively though. Runs around, plays, eats, drinks, etc. Behaves pretty normally now. Even the walking is just fine. He's just a half pint. So I'm not super worried. YET. I have been cleaning his tush frequently, and only once was the vent actually blocked. Mostly it's just a dirty bum.

We'll see, only time will tell. If he's meant to make it, he will. We've done everything we can for him.

Anyways, in the mean time... here's a current pic. I taped a compact mirror to the brooder wall. They think it's FASCINATING!

Hens are the perfect incubator so I wouldn't worry too much. The only time I would worry is if she gets off the nest and stays off for a longgggg time.
