FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Noob question here: I have 11 eggs incubating. They are at day ten. I candled them yesterday and about half of them had vein formation. The others had a dark half like there was something going on, and one was almost completely dark except for the air cell, which was still pretty small. What does this mean? If I can't see veins by day 10 does that mean the egg is not developing and won't hatch?
What color are the shells? Darker shells are harder to see into and there may be veining but you won't see it unless you have a strong flashlight or candler.

Ive wanted to try that but I dont know if Id be able to get something like that together

I'm currently using a homemade cooler incubator and although I'm only on day 12, things appear to be going well. All in all, I spent $10 to make this and that was for the light and the bulbs. Everything else was stuff I had laying around the house. It took all of 15 minutes to make.........I don't count the cost of the thermometers/hygrometers in the cost of building it because I can use them for lots of other things.

I got the styrofoam cooler from a doctors office I clean - they received medicine in them and I kept bringing them home much to my husband's chagrin - but I finally found a use for them! I'm actually going to go out and buy another light today so I can build a second one. Everything else I used is just stuff I had laying around the house. :) I do have to keep a towel around the cooler because it is so cold in my office - but it's no big deal.

When I build the other one this afternoon, would you like me to take pictures of the process for you? :)

Yes please I would love that. If I can save some money and make a reliable incubator Id be stoked.

if you are seeing viens or dark spots on your eggs they are dead. but if you cant see through fhem and only a air pocket, congratulats you have live eggs.
dark spots in the egg [vieny looking] indicate that the egg is dead.

Check out this guys Videos on Youtube. I followed his instructions ( I am a 49 Yr. old woman with no electrical or handyman background at all) and built 2 coolerbators. The first one cost me about $20 because I had an old cooler in my garage and some of the parts needed. The second cost me about $60 because I had to buy the cooler and went with a wafer thermostat instead.I now use them for my hatchers and they have never given me a problem.

Hi all
Haven't posted except for the NYD hatch event.
So far I had:
Feb 2: 4 Bourbon Red turkeys hatch
Feb 9: 3 Australorps

expecting Ameraucanas and will have to keep you posted. In January, had the Ameraucanas hatch as well as some Welsummers.

I have had really good hatches so far from my Ameraucanas and the turkeys just surprised me being less than a year old and turning out some very nice chicks (lower photo).
