After they are 7 days old fertility drops significantly-

For shipped eggs yes. I just set some of my own eggs that were 12 days old last week. Candled last night and all of them are fertile.

Well today, I candled the eggs in the incubator that I had found the light bulb burned out on Sun (eggs cold, temp a 74*). There are a few survivors and mostly from the older set eggs that are due to hatch on the 17th. Most of my losses were in my later set eggs that were due to hatch on the 25th. The larger "chicks" must have been able to retain heat a little better that the younger ones in the eggs.

Hoping I get some to hatch. Guessing they will be late because of the incident. Go chickies!

Oh good, I was wondering how those would turn out. So many times there are some survivors. I am glad you got some!

I am officially in lock down with my small number of barred rock..3 eggs. With, some pretty bad air sacs. All of the eggs had bad airs sacs, some clear up the side. Sure hope these babies can make the turn in those eggs with the big air sacs.

well, i got two BIG styrofoam coolers at the good will store today and stuff to start making home made incubators....my husband and I will be making them tomorrow!!! In the mean time, I have a question if I may, I picked up 30 silkie eggs yesterday but i have more coming a few days this week...will the silkie eggs be ok to hold off for a few more days til incubation?

I set 8 silkie eggs on Feb 2nd. The oldest egg was collected on Jan 13th (1 day shy of 3 weeks old), the newest egg was Jan 23rd (already over a week old). I set them anyways, and expected some duds. However ALL 8 were fertile and all started developing. Now, I had to toss 1 because the shell cracked, and I think 2 or 3 more have quit (not sure)... but that Jan 13th egg is still going so far.

I think it all depends on the eggs, how they were stored, if they were shipped, etc.

My 4 eggs that hatched last weekend were all within 7 days fresh when I set them... & look what happened. It does make me scared that I'll have even more trouble with this next set. Pooh.

So out of my first had I had none make it then my second hatch I had 1 make it. My third batch is due next weekend. But I felt so bad about my baby all alone I found a local girl who hatches and bought 6 chicks! So I am happy and so is my chick. Just wish they were all from my eggs!
