FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

I have 14 hens/2 roosters, so it can be a mess when it rains non-stop, which it has. I didn't have any moisture problems during the summer or early fall. But I haven't been able to keep the coop completely dry during winter/spring. I am going to redo my coop design for the next winter/spring season. I just keep putting down fresh hay/pine shavings down if I know that it is going to be rainy and cold.

One thing I found out that works is sprinkling scratch down on the floor of the coop..that way they chooks stir it up for you. I just love that method...less work for me which I love!! I am loving all the new faces and new hatches...

THANK YOU!!

next question, what is the most humane way to dispatch an half born chick? My last one is bleeding from the egg....

I would just let nature take its course. It isn't in pain, and if it bleeds out it will just lose energy and pass quietly. They can lose some blood and be ok. Does it looks like it pipped through a vein?

it looks like it didnt form completely and the others picked at it too, and now its just bleeding. blood welling up in the shell....ugh...aren't i just a ray of freaking sunshine with this last few days. I pray to GOD my next hatch is better. And as for washing the chicks....that stuff is not coming off....its like I want to take a tiny comb and brush the hardened "gel" off them. They seemed SO wet when born....this is just crazy. I feel like all of this is my fault and just miserable today. I am sorry for being the Debbie Downer in here :(

Well. I am disappointed, confused, sad, and feeling like a failure....and I have NO idea what happened. Especially at the end.

Eggs in incubator 1: 48
one doz completely infertile, -12
another 11 thrown out early
lockdown: 25

What is that like a 15% hatch rate!!?!! How did this set do so bad???? I am at a loss for understanding this morning. And horribly sad.
Sorry this didn't turn out better for you

On the bright side, you did have some healthy chicks hatch! Atleast you didn't have to deal with what I did- my first 6 hatches I had NO chicks, they all died- most before they ever got out of the shell. I know it doesn't feel like it now, but be happy about the ones you have!
