February 2017 Hatch-a-long

I would probably keep the blockade up. Peaches will figure it out eventually, then let Mima do her best with what she has and see what happens. I doubt the second hen will take over or she would be settling in on a different nest by now. It may just be a "relax and see what happens" kind of thing. Wishing you the very best!

Thank you.
I'm taking it day by day. I agree with you on keeping the nest blocked from the youngster. I only mention Peaces as a potential to take over if Mima can't handle taking care of them for the "duration"--whatever that in this is going on...

So, I just sent my husband off to deliver a box of chicks to friends that have a farm. No more February hatch babies. (Which, as you all know is happy and sad all at the same time!) Here are most of them:

I had a chick hatch that seemed to have splayed legs, so I splinted it with a straw and rubber band method. But the chick is stretching it's legs straight back, and twisting it's head to the left. I figured it has some type of neurological defect. To me it looks like massive seizures or a stroke. I can't put it out of it's misery, because I'm a wimp, and each time I think it's dead it perks right back up. The other chick I hobbled is hopping around. I think I need a bigger rubber band.

The little deformed chick is now 3 days old. I keep putting it next to the water and it drinks, but it hasn't eaten anything. There are electrolites and vitamins in the water.

Any suggestions on how to help this poor chick?

Thanks

Does it bend its legs at all? I've started using the tape like vet wrap that sticks to itself. (much easier on feathered legs) wrap around each leg, then wrap a little piece around the area between the legs. Seems to give the chick more flexibility.

I've seen a straight sip of Nutridrench do wonders! It's a quicker, stronger boost of vitamins. Worth a try if you can't put the chick down.

Thank you for the response. I started giving it vitamin E with selenium so hopefully it will pull through.

Also look up stargazing. I had one get better from stargazing with Nutridrench also.
