February 2017 Hatch-a-long

Hi! I forgot to look for the February Hatch Along earlier, but better late than never! I have 20 eggs that I purchased from GardenWren in an auction. Today is day 14 and all 20 eggs seem to be progressing. Not bad for shipped eggs from TN to WA!!! I do have a few air cells that are wonky, but am keeping my fingers crossed. Those I may try to put in an egg carton with the bottom cut out when the go into lock down. She did a great job packing them. Hatch day is the 15th. Hoping maybe for a Valentines chick or two!

Thank you! I'm praying for a good hatch. Previously I used a Farm Innovator Pro Series 4250 and had horrible hatch rates. I bought the Brinsea Octagon 20 Ex, so I'm hoping for better results. I think I'll still need to use the FI incubator for lock down, as I can't imagine trying to hatch these eggs in the Brinsea! They seem so incredibly crowded!!!

I always name eggs when I start incubation. Sometimes, the names stick and become the real hen or roo names. With my SLW, the egg named Daisy was the sole hatch, and I ended up with... of course... a cockerel named Daisy.

He was welcomed by a farmer friend.

"Looks like you'll need a new name," he said to the cockerel... "You're going to be... Mister Daisy."

I am going to mark and set my Golden Sebright eggs tomorrow. Here are all the shiny, golden names:

Dorado
Ambrosia
Zarina
Hazel
Acorn

Love this! I have a Topaz. And of course, he's one I hatched and is a roo. As I live in the city, I can't keep him. I think I'll try to go until someone complains though... maybe egg bribes will keep neighbors happy!

I think so many of us have moments when we hope egg bribes will keep neighbours happy when we have a darling roo we want to keep! It just might work.

Shhh... I have a 4 month old Silkie that I am convinced is a cockerel, because he was fighting full force with Mister Daisy. Daisy was rehomed, but the Silkie is still here with his girls. He was sporting black dreadlocks one rainy day, so I named him Captain Jack Sparrow. He's so funny. If he stays quiet, maybe I can keep him. We'll see.

Mine isn't quiet! He's 9 weeks old and has been crowing since he was 6 weeks old. Just moved them all out to their coop (8x8 wood shed). Need to get a run up ASAP.

I set some four hen eggs on Saturday, dry incubating - the second time we've tried incubating, and the first one didn't go well. I set these on Saturday evening, so I guess tonight would be time to candle them (Thursday evening)?

I checked my eggs yesterday evening. Some seem a bit behind, but I'm not surprised since I had trouble getting temps up for the first couple of days. I expect these will hatch a day or two late. So far I can only tell that I have two quitters. The Marans eggs are a bit hard. I can see in them okay but all of my embryos were sluggish so it was hard to say whether they were good or not.

Its up to you. I usually like to candle day 6, 12, and 18 (start of lockdown). With my first few incubations I liked to candle nearly every day lol but now I am more of a set it and forget it hatcher.
