FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

Precious chicks, everyone! Congratulations! I am going into Day 20 with my 4 Delaware eggs in the bator. Two other groups are due the 13th and the 17th, then I plan to wait until mid-March to start the big hatch. At least, I think I'm waiting.

My new babies are all from my flock of hatchery quality New Hampshires. Most of my hens are from the hatchery but my roos are all second and third generation that I have raised from a broody hatchery hen. It looks like there are some other things showing up in a couple of the new chicks - two of them have black stripes on their heads-not sure what would have been in their bloodlines to make that! I love them no matter what - they are wonderful!!! Several of the chicks are really red - do you think that could be a throwback to Rhode Island reds or just a red gene in the NH's?

Guess I can join the party. Just set 10 lovely, local eggs into my homemade incubator at 4pm.

My eggs were all laid in the past 3 days from a lady who lives near me. She says I got:

2 Ameruacana
2 Buff Orp mix
1 Barred Rock mix
1 Light Brahma mix
1 Blue Wyandotte mix
2 unknown browns (of questionable fertility)

All the "mix" are because she knows who laid them but not which rooster is the daddy! haha.

Gotta love the "mutts"!

Cheers!

Yes I see his little black stripe..and I asked what breed because I thought some seemed 'darker' yellow-red..it will be interesting to see when they start feathering...I love my chicks when they are different.

I ordered Lemon Blue Cochin eggs last time and when they hatched I had a black Cochin???? Don't know how that got in there? But now she is my absolute favorite! I go to the basement and bring her back up into the house to sit on the sofa and snuggle when I am home! Is that mean to play favorites?

Haha, I have a tendency to play favorites once in a while too! One of my hens, Spice Girl will follow us around (when it is warmer!) just begging to be picked up and carried. My one roo, Mikey, he is my buddy and begs to be carried around too! None of the chicks I have gotten from the hatcheries had black stripes on their heads - that's why I am really wondering where these markings came from.....hmmmmm, traveling salesman?! We are the only farm for 2 miles with any chickens.....maybe aliens?!
