FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

I think that was in reference to my question about why the chicks are several colors, all coming from Splash x splash (Marans) crosses...

Well, they sure are cute, whatever they end up being!

The Delawares are already pipping this morning. It's Day 20.

Splashes can be a bit different in coloration at first, I've found. Had one I thought was extremely light blue because it was hatched with a splash that I was used to, that silvery creamy color, but it turned out to be a splash anyway.

We are one week away from our first hatch day! Yay!

As of yesterday, ALL eggs (12) have chicks growing in them.

We'll candle again on day 18 right before lockdown, and next Sunday should be hatch day. We are hoping/praying for a better than 50% hatch. I have 5 sebright eggs in there, and I've heard they are a difficult breed to hatch. All 5 eggs have viable chicks in them at this point in the game, so hopefully 3 or better will hatch.

Am I the only one more interested in watching the incubator than the Superbowl???

Mine have been on LOCKDOWN since last night at 6pm, only thing I can do know is attempt to keep my nose off the bator and do more research for my next "impossible" hatching attempt. I will be attempting to hatch out 20 eggs that have sat in my basement for the past 5-6 weeks... hence the "impossible" part.

I'm wishing you all the luck Livinwright Farm !!!

I think I have a zero percent hatch here at day #22. Talk about a bust on my first attempt. Live and learn. I'm going to pull the plug and lick my wounds in the next few hours.

It was nice hearing everyones excitement during hatching and seeing the pictures!! I LOVE THE PICS! I am going in search of more fertile eggs today - and I'll do better next time (keep the humidity lower and try to watch for high temp spikes).

usschicago1 - any pipping yet?

up and runs to the first thing that got in his way!!!

Hatch update! Well, for my first attempt at hatching, I am not disappointed! I went into it thinking that if I could only have 50 percent, I would be happy! Well, I am HAPPY!!!! Out of 28 eggs, I have 17 fuzz butts in the brooder, two newbies drying off in the bator, 1 egg pipping, 6 eggs that don't show signs of any pipping - yet and 2 died - one of the dead ones was too big and malpositioned in the egg, the other one was very tiny and died after 20 hours - he didn't look good from the start.
Now for the surprise - I NEVER THOUGHT MY BANTY CHOCHIN ROO COULD BREED MY NH HENS - I have 3 very good sized fuzzies in the brooder with feathered feet......geez - what does a NH hen and a Bantam Buff Cochin roo =? A cute mutt???????? Well, I can tell you a new chicken tractor for my Banty Cochins is one of the first things I am building when we get rid of this snow!!!!
