Awe!

Well, we had 4 pips, 2 zips, and everybody seems to have come to a grinding halt. They are exhausted after a long day of pippin' and pushin', though I have to say they are making some noise in there. Couldn't hear them for the longest time but we can hear them the last few hours.

I'm worried about some little tiny containers of water we put in there last night. We had a lot of trouble bringing the humidity over 50% and put a couple of tiny bowls of water in there (those clear glass ingredient bowls you use for cooking). Well, the humidity came back up, but now the chicks are starting to hatch & we need to get those bowls outta there before somebody falls in and drowns!

I read somewhere about someone needing to open the bator door for one reason or another and spritzed water inside with a fine mist on the eggs to keep the babies from shrink-wrapping since some had pipped... has anyone tried this? The door wouldn't be open more than 3 seconds.

I hate taking chances. I don't want to lose any chickies!

I love pictoral teaching! What day of life are you doing this?

I did the feather/wing sexing technically on day 3 but typically I do it on Day 2. I had someone try telling me on one of these threads that feather sexing can only be done in breeds that are sex-linked

, as far as I am aware EE, SLW, GLW, BG, SLRW, or BA w/ SLRW or BG do not create sex-links.

I learned last year that this can be done with ANY day to a couple day old chick placed in front of you. Have fun sexing your chicks now

I haven't done the water-spritzing method. I have, however, used the hot shower method. I got a hot shower running, brought the incubator into the bathroom, shut the door and then opened it with no probs. The rest of the hatch went fine. I had two pips when I opened it up in the bathroom.

That is incorrect. If you have a sex link, no feather sexing is needed anyway-they're sexed by color. They must be bred for the trait, a fast feathering parent to a slow feathering parent (can't recall which is the male right now) for feather sexing to be reliable.

First pip of the three eggs on Day 21

has to be a slow feathering male to a fast feathering female.

That was what I was thinking, but then, I didn't want to say it the wrong way--thanks!
