Fed my girls some baby mice.......Ewwwwww!

Nature is red in tooth and claw. I think it was Lord Tennyson who wrote that.

I guess you don't worry about parasites when the mice are pinkies?

I don't know-it seems easier to give them crickets and mealworms. Never seen a cute cricket or mealworm. LOL

I know!
I felt really bad doing it, but with their Momma dead, they were going to die anyway..........poor little things.
It was either leave them in the field to dehydrate, or be picked off by a crow, or one of the barn cats........or
give my chickens some extra protein............
I believe it was a fairly quick death for the little pink ones.....................

Our Barred Rock is an good mouser, she'll chase em down and beat em to death then eat them. Saw it firsthand...
Also this last winter I was cleaning under the doghouse and found some half grown mice under it(actually one of the chickens found them)... They were a little slow from the sudden light I guess, I was able to pick them up and toss them to the flock... It was chicken football chaos...

All of my chickens are scared of mice

There were several under a straw bale in the coup ... the chickens came to investigate and "flew the coop" as fast as they could! I have never seen such chicken chickens

Only my 4-month-old BR/EE cockerel was interested in chasing the mice.

There was a dead half-grown rat in the pen the other morning though ... maybe they are getting over their mouse-o-phobia. They didn't eat it though, just killed it.

Never saw my chickens get baby mice but the ducks will play tug a war with them just like they do slugs. My red heeler dog, on the other hand, picks them up real gently in her mouth like they were one of her pups and guards them. Eventually she gives it up and moves on.

When I clean, the cats are standing there waiting to catch any mice that run. The chickens always end up taking the babies though. Not frisky enough for the cats to be bothered.
