Fed up with water founts

Max, I have a waterer similiar to yours, only not as tall and a different brand. Mine holds 3 gallons. Never had any problem with it leaking. We greased the O ring with vaseline and (I'm thinking this is important) I only hand tighten it. I don't try to put the lid on as tight as possible and I can remove the lid with one hand. As I said, no problems with leakage at all.

We just returned two of the big 3-gallon metal founts to TSC today, because they BOTH leaked (the new ones seem to be fine, even though they're the same kind). Before we could get out of the store, they had the defective founts back on the shelf, marked down to half price.

I use water founts only while the chicks are young enough that they may drown or are in a brooder and run through the water and wet the floor. After that I use pretty much any container I can find that holds water and they can reach. There are small buckets, old pots, refigerator drawers, flower pots and bottoms, all found at thrift shops and yard sales.

I wish I could return this one but I’m sure they will say "no receipt, no return." I bought it three months ago. But it’s gotten worse every time I’ve filled it. It's just so infuriating. I went back out after I thought I had it fixed........half the water is leaked out

I can’t keep doing this to the floor. It’s ¾” treated wood but it leaks under the wall framing and I’m sure has started rotting the wood.

I have a bunch of cornish roasters going outside soon. I’ll try the Vaseline trick someone suggested with it outside. It’s never coming in again.
