Feed change times for Barnevelders

Hey!































Wondering is changing the chicks feed the normal regime for Barnevelders as it is for most other chicks/hens?


As in chick starter for 6 weeks then grower up til theyre laying at about 16weeks for normal hens but what would the regime be for barnevelders since they dont start laying for months n months n months

so how long on starter and grower for Barnevelders before laying feed?

You don't need to do anything special because of breed. As you get close to finishing up the chick starter (age unimportant) start adding in the next feed. Grower or all flock. Feed that until until 20-30 weeks when they start laying. Finish up the bag.
I keep mine on starter until they are incorporated into the flock, 20-24 weeks, then switch them to an all flock. Don't over complicate things.

My Barnevelders didn't start laying until they were 37 weeks old. So definitely don't start them on layer feed based on some age number (and definitely not at 16 weeks). Better yet, don't give them layer feed at all. Flock raiser is much better, with calcium on the side (crushed eggshell or oyster shell always available) so they can regulate their calcium intake themselves. They know best how much they need and when. My Barnevelders don't lay in the winter (where winter for them is half the year!) and definitely don't need extra calcium during that time. So don't force it on them with layer feed. Flock raiser can be fed at any age, including to chicks (Purina's is 20% protein) so it's the easiest no fuss feed for all ages.
