FEED COST PER STATE

Thank you so much to everyone who helped on this experiment.

To find which state you would make the most profit from by selling eggs I divided the cost of eggs by the cost if feed. Next to each state is the states place in the list of lowest price of living ( The lower the number the lower the cost )

The list if from most to least profiable and states with a star next to them (**) are high egg producing states.

New York: .49 #48
Illinois: .46 #22
Whashington: .35 #38
Ontario (blue eggs): .32
Colorado: .29 #34
Maryland: .255 #46
Wisconsin: .25 #23
Vermont: .245 #40
Ontario (normal eggs): .24
Ohio**: .233 #16
California**: .233 #49
Nebraska**: .230 #17
Michigan**: .17 #5
Missouri: .16.5 #4
Kansas: .133 #8

I'll add more as the list grows but this is what I have so far. Sorry for not adding the cost of living in ontario, I didn't know how to put ut in relation to the other states. Sanfrancisco is also not included in the numbers because it has a separate minimumwage and cost from most of Cali.

Sanfrancisco**: .21

What formula did you use to determine your numbers? How much feed did you figure per hen per day? How many eggs did you figure per day/week per hen?

I just divided the price of 1 carton by the price of feed to find the state with the best ratio. It would take a lot longer to find the exact profit and cost per carton and this seemed like an wasier way to get a general idea.

But its really not accurate at all. You'd have to determine how long it takes a hen to lay 12 eggs, how much feed she ate in that time period, and how much that amount of feed cost.

It's not a list of profit per carton, its just supposed to rank states by least to most expensive feed costs.I divided the price of thw cartons by the price of the feed because costs vary by state.I can try to get a profit per year from 15 birds though.Do you think it would be better to just do the RIR per year production or do 240 eggs per year. ( thats about what my EE , Olive Egger , and Wellsummer/RIR bird lay a year )

For instance my feed is $9 for 50 lbs. That's $0.18 per pound. On average a chicken will eat 1/3 of a pound of feed a day roughly. So that's $0.06 of feed per day. And if she layed 12 eggs in 14 days "just an estimate, this will vary a lot". That's $0.84 of feed to make 12 eggs. That's also not figuring in water, oyster shell/grit, electricity "if coop has lights", cartons if you have to buy them, fuel to/from selling eggs.
