Feed for 6 & 7 week chicks

Starter/Grower? or Grower/Finisher? Have searched and searched, read and read, and now just confused.

Going to buy some food today and would like to buy the 50 lbs bag of whatever type of food I get for my flock of 7 chickens (breeds in my signature) from Tractor Supply.

Grower/finisher is typically for meat birds since they are processed young. Are you raising chickens for eggs? If so starter/grower is what you want for chicks that age since it has enough protein (usually 18-20%) to help them grow.

At 6, 7 weeks either feed is fine. Don't get too stuck on the terminology - "grower" can come in broiler form, or there's lower protein grower that's meant for layers. Starter is also fine if you prefer a higher protein feed.

I use Purina flock raiser Mostly but I will purchase Any major brand that has the latest manufacture date when I go to the store (tractor supply).


The way I figure, more than half the year:
- you have chicks
- you have hens not laying due to daylight hours
- you have hens not laying due to molt (and this can be months and months of the year if you look at all the times any single hen is molting)
- You have a broody
- You might have a roo

I just see no reason to buy layer feed when any given day one of these factors could be impacting the flock and layer feed would negatively impact at least one bird. This is why I don’t even consider any feed but the most recent mill date Flock Raiser (any brand) with a can of oyster shell always present
