feed prices $$

At the price of gas, Nadine, what is the total to pick up the feed?
Have you looked around for local milling sources? I was surprised to find there were several around Aiken, of all places, the hotbed of hoity-toity.
For all our talk of being Old South high-brow, SC is still largely agricultural.

It really is only 43 miles round trip up to the NC feed store. I only make the trip once a month, if possible. I buy chicken food and Guinea pig food while there as we only like Blue Seal in both feeds. My DD breeds and shows her Guinea pigs and we buy several bags each trip.
There aren't any local milling places that I can find but I don't know that I would buy them at this time anyhow. I will have to become more desperate. I really like that my Cochins each lay every day when others seem to have problems getting eggs every day from their hens. I am really big on feed making the chicken (or the Guinea pig).
So, if at all possible, I will continue to go to NC for this brand of food but will always keep my eyes open for other alternatives. Thank goodness for small trucks with economical fuel use!

Right around $20 each for 50# bags of feed... I'm beginning to think I chose the wrong time to dedicate my life to the birds...

Start and Grow Purina $15 for #50. same for Layena. same store charges 26.99 for Organic Pride chick and layer.

Chick start Nutrena also $15 for #50 at different feed store.

The TSC 40 miles away had Dumor chick start for $14, #50 bag.

50lb Purina Flock Raiser - last month was $14.65, last week I paid $15.80. Hope they don't raise the price that much every month!

Got sale price on layer for $9.99, bought 10 at that time. Usually ~11-12.50 at the stores here. I do also feed them cattle feed because when they get into the barn they eat that instead of their feed anyway. That's going to be going up to $8.00. We feed oystershell and egg shells to them too. They don't seem to be lacking when we feed 50/50 with the chicken and cattle feed. In fact, we've kept the same egg production and decreased prices so everyone wins!
