I have 40 birds that are first time laying. I know the layer plus is the better feed because it has 18% protein as opposed to the plain layer at 16%, but at $5 more a bag, it seems difficult to justify. Recently I have been mixing the two together. What are people’s thoughts? I am going through 2 bags of grain a week and if I can save myself $5 a week, it helps.

I use 20% All Flock Pellets, with 16% Layer Pellets mixed in.
Just yesterday I bought some 22% Meat Bird feed to boost their protein intake abit incase anyone is still going through a molt, & help them get through winter.

I think that during molting season and maybe winter, the extra protein would be nice to your chickens, but in other seasons the plain layer would work fine. Let's see what others say.
X2.

My flock does fine on 16% (so all spring and summer) unless they are going through a molt, or once it starts getting really cold... then I can tell they need more protein.
