I am looking for a recipe to be able to make up my own chicken feed. I will have about 100 chicks coming in spring. I live in a farming community where corn, wheat, soybeans, oats. are quite able to be gotten ahold of from farmers. Cheaper that way, you know cut out the middle man. I an also wondering about using some molasses to help hold the minerals and some grit to it so they get a good ration. I also think I heard you are not supposed to feed soybeans to chickens. Looking for any other kinds of protien. Any help out there?

I also think I heard you are not supposed to feed soybeans to chickens
From what I understand, those who are apposed to using soybeans, do not like them since most are GMO.

Up here the local feedmill uses fish for the protein.. because that is what we have in Alaska.

No idea on a good recipe though.

you can feed roasted soybeans. raw soybeans are toxic. If you get raw soybeans then you should boil or bake them to remove the toxin.

google "feed raw soybeans to chickens", you will get the info.

I free range my chickens as of now they are not free ranging cause everything is covered with snow.

I mix roasted soybean meal quarters with corn and store bought layer feed. I also use a powder for electrolytes and some of the trace vitamins and mix in water. Couple times a week I use raw vinegar 1 tblspoon with a gallon water.

At this time I mix a 5 gallon pail half full with roasted soybean quarters and the other half with store bought feed and mix it to about 8 gallons cracked corn. I also use 1 scoop of black sunflower seed in this mix. Once I get back to the feed mill I am going to get a bag of oats and make that small part of the mix, maybe 10 percent.

So I give the powder in water, vinegar in water and the store bought layers feed for some other vitamins and minerals the beans and corn do not supply.
Is this a complete feed mix? Well kinda.

You can also use some lysine in a lower crude protein diet. I have used lysine with pigs before when price soybeans get high. You can further research.

For calculating amount of proteins between the corn and beans you can use this link

Pearsons square protein calculation
This calculator can be used with other types of feed.
If you look to the left on the web page you will see different kind of feed and protein values.
As far as grit and calcium, I free feed both so it is there if the chickens want it.

I use a old cast iron burr grinder to grind the corn, I coarse grind the corn. I use soybean quarters try keep same size as the corn and the layer feed.

If you look on the internet there is recipes or rations for chickens.
