A friend told me that I could put a bowl of play sand in the brooder for the chicks to use as grit and then put s piece of sod on there for them to enjoy. Help, not sure if I should. THey are 14 days today.

I haven't used sand before but I think it was about 2 weeks that I started adding a little grit in with the food and would sprinkle around for them to scratch at [IMG]

PS, I have read on here that they have a ball dusting in the sand

Sounds like a good idea to me...I have 5 day old chicks, raised by their MaMa and she lets them eat everything!

We had our run filled with sand, it works out great for grit and for easy clean up and no mud. I do give my chickens paraket grit sold at walwart, i started giving them a little bit at a time when they were 3 or 4 weeks old and they think its a treat so i give them some a couple of times a weeks.
