Feeder on the maintenance door?

A very good point. I was actually thinking that since I'll be adding a 2x4 or something larger in the maintenance door opening to keep the bedding in, (I'd like to try the deep litter method) I could mount a feeder on top of that. I'd also be opening the pop door before opening the maintenance door and hopefully they'll already be out in the run.

Make sure you've taken into account the weight of the feed and feeder. At the very least you will have to use HEAVY LARGE hinges on the door, screwed into THICK HEAVY WOOD, so it doesn't sag and bind. Doors are not great weightbearing things, especially quickie little plywood doors.

Really, mounting it on the door doesn't take up any less room than mounting it on any OTHER free wall space, and the engineering is much much simpler there. (Filling will be so easy that I don't see you having any problems even if it's on the coop wall rather than the door)

So, make sure you are really saving yourself trouble not MAKING trouble...

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
