I am so excited. I will pick my 'point of lay' hens and roo up next Sat. The coop is finished, the nest boxes are hung, the roost and drop board are ready. The run (which dh has started calling "Fort Knox") is done.. I have tried to think of EVERYTHING--to make their home perfect for them....Well, today, I realize--I DO NOT have a feeder or waterer, I have no feed, oyster shell or dust bath. I have the prefect bin for their dust bath..

So, I would like your opinions of the perfect waterer and feeders for 13 hens and a roo!

What works best for you???Thank you Dixie

Around here your options are limited on the choices. I will say I hate the large plastic waterers and prefer the metal ones.....or even just an open pan for their water.

I have a metal hanging feeder.

I have a metal waterer, elevated off of the floor just inside the door so I don't have to walk in to change the water. I fill up the feeder every week after I have swept and mopped the coop.

I live in middle Tenneessee and we are members of the local farmers co-op so I get all my supplies and feed there. As far as the best sort of waterers and feeders, I guess that is a matter of opinion. I really do like the double wall fount stainless steel waterers, especially the 3 gallon and 5 gallon sizes. Right now I feed the grown ups their feed in large size stainless flat bottom dishes that they can't knock around or knock over. When it gets cold I will probably look into hanging feeders in the coop...I put the oyster shell in a separate stainless dish (same as I use for the feed) in each coop/living area. I use sawdust for their dust bath...and like I said, I get all my feed at the co-op, too. One stop shopping, that is what I like!

I have the metal waterer and it works fine. I also have the plastic feeder and it works fine. They are in a hanging position and it does help keep the food and water clean. If you set the water on the ground elevate it with a cinder block or something, it will stay cleaner. Good luck w/your new birds!

I have a post on homemade feeders in coop @ designs. Someone else also posted there about a waterer they made. Many choices thru out this site.
