I have a flock of 13 chickens, 2 turkeys, and 9 ducks. I am currently feeding them a mixed flock feed that has 20% protein. I am currently spending $60 on feed each month. Each bag is $20. Can I mix layer feed and mixed flock feed? Say 1 bag of mixed flock and 2 bags of layer or 2 bags of mixed flock and 1 bag of layer? I’m only getting eggs from my chickens. My turkeys and ducks won’t start laying until next spring (I have a pair of Jumbo Perkins and laying season is over for us), so they are costing me a lot of money. The turkeys and ducks are my breeder birds. Layer feed is $15.

Layer feed is lower in protein, and higher in calcium. The calcium can cause problems in birds not currently laying.

The all flock is higher in protein, so birds will consume less of it than a lower protein feed like a layer. Your birds would eat more layer, so in the end the cost would probably be similar.

That is a good point about the protein. I never thought of that. I’ll stick with what I’m doing. Thanks.
