what is the duckling killer???

I have always heard that people don't give ducklings medicated feed at all. Others may be able to explain further.

I give meat bird crumbles as starter food to chicks and ducks, because I've never had any cocci here, and because I believe preventative use of medicated feeds is a contributor to the development of medication resistant strains of diseases. The meat bird crumbles are high in protein. Obviously they are not a lot of use on properties where cocci is problem, but they are worth considering otherwise.

I feed gamebird 22% to everybody and put oyster shell out free choice so my laying hens can meet their calcium needs. I also keep some corid on hand in case I get a cocci outbreak. This works well for me because I free range and it allows me to just buy one feed that works for everything from chicks and ducklings to layers and roosters.

I feed my chicks and ducklings the Dumor brand from TSC.The ducklings are doing very well on it and seem to be growing very fast.I fed some chicks some gamebird feed once I had gotten from Southern States and it killed numerous chicks.Medicated feed can do duckling's in especialy call ducks.

Hmmm...
My chicks and ducklings are both on medicated chick starter. All are ok.
Outside the older chicks and chickens are on nonmedicated grower.
Only the quail are on gamebird crumble. But when I first got chicks they ate the gamebird feed as the quail were with them.

I did have one outbreak of cocci when I switched one batch of chicks outside to the nonmedicated. They were 9 weeks old and I was very bummed as what I was reading said they should be ok.

Other than that everyone is happy, hungry and growing way to fast out of their cute fuzzy stage.

Kitty I am switching to 24% for everyone with some scratch grain and oyster shell free choice too. the reason I am witching is because I am raising turkeys and ducks for meat and the poultry science department at NC State recommended 19% or more protein for meat birds and if i have mixed flock to make sure i provide scratch grain and oyster. so viola and I have no troubles yet. My ducklings and turkeys are still too small to be outside free range so they are in brooders in the master bedroom with me
