feeding chooks kitchen scraps

lol...yes they chase my mittens, and also the cuffs of my one white chunky jumper. It is so much fun . they never fail to spot it stickingout from the cuff of my jacket. Then they start climbing all over me searching for the white stuff. they get so disappointed that it doesn't taste right.

I love giving them spaghetti and treats and watching the antics. They get in such a mess.

I gave my hens a roasted lamb bone with some meat on it last night ..wow scary what they will do to a piece of meat!!!!

Here's my list (developed to share with neighbors who I give eggs!)

CHICKEN SCRAPS AND OTHER EGG TRADES:
I appreciate any trades for eggs especially including food scraps for the chickens.

Chickens can eat EVERYTHING except:
* no chicken products (please no chicken meat, eggs, or egg shells)
* no moldy or spoiled food. Wilted is OK.
* no potato peels (green potato peels are especially bad, but even non-green ones are not very good raw - non-green potato peels are OK if cooked)
* no avocado
* no shell beans (dried beans); OK if cooked.
* no onions or garlic - this last one added because the eggs did taste weird.

Edited to add - some people do feed their chickens chicken products. They will eat them. I think it is a bad idea to feed chickens chicken, so that is my policy.

Mine murdered the leftover birthday cake this afternoon, once they figured out it wasnt going to eat them first!!

We feed ours house scraps, between the chooks, the compost bins and the worm farm nothing leaves the property

Basically, if I would eat it, I feed it to the chooks, except avocado and chicken meat (I don't mind feeding them cooked egg scraps, they love it). Our raw vege scraps go into the compost/worm bin anyway, so they mostly get cooked leftovers.
In the first 6 months of having 5 chooks we only used one 25kg bag of scratch grain along with lots of snails (we collect them at night from the vege patch), greens and scraps, which makes for some very economically friendly eggs (well, if you ignore the chicken ritz my dh built them, lol).

No heavy grease or salty food (excessive salt is toxic to chicken).

I give them dried crushed eggshells, calcium as good as oyster shells and it is free.

I don't want my neighbors giving my chickens egg shells from OTHER chickens. I do feed them their own. I don't know for sure, but I think that having egg shells from other chickens could spread disease?

So, rather than going into all this detail, I just say no egg shells.

Good point that I should add no salty foods. Most people I know don't eat that stuff anyhow.
