Feeding Diatomaceous Earth to chickens?

I got some DE for pest (mosty ant) control, I got the food grade kind. I don't know much (or anything, really) about DE, just keep hearing good things about it. Do you feed it to the chickens? Goats? (for internal parasites) Do you mix it in their food? How much and how often? Do you sprinkle it around their pen or what? Does it wash away with the rain? Sorry for all the questions... I'm sure there's tons of posts on this topic. I couldn't find what I was looking for.
