feeding egg shells

nuke 30 sec plastic bag crush into bowl next to feeder bowl. They eat it when they want it.

I wash, then nuke for three minutes, then crush. I put it on top of the oyster shell as they don't much care for oyster shell alone, but will scarf it down if it's mixed in with crushed egg shell.

I often will boil my quail eggs and feed them to my chicken but I would never feed them there own shells, I dont even put shells or chicken in my worm bins cause I dont want them to eat worms that ate chicken lol. Cannibalism in most animals in fact all that Im aware of is often the cause of degenerative issues. Mad cow disease I think is a good example of this. Now I would think the risk for anything like this is extremely small but I always like to be safe rather than sorry.

Degenerative issues in cannibalism are most likely linked with feeding brain/nerve tissue that has been infected. I'm pretty sure that egg shells contain nothing that would transmit anything detrimental to your flock....if that were the case, there wouldn't be a chicken alive on the planet.

Since I did a bit of baking this morning, I took all the egg shells and put them in the microwave for about 2 minutes, crushed them and mixed them in the chicken's warm oatmeal and raisins treat....they gobbled it all up within minutes.

i don't bother drying the shells..
just shush them in a container...when i have a bunch of them...and whirl them in the blender...
and mix into there treats a couple times a week

I don't clean OR was OR dry them.... I just crack my eggs and send the kids out with the shells to the girls! They LOVE them and it is quite entertaining to watch! I figure if they are eating bugs, there is way worse they are eating than the eggs they just lay....

Is there a reason I should be washing/baking them?

None at all!

I dry mine either in the oven or on top of the wood stove. I find it easier to crush them if they have been dried. If the shells are soiled, i will wash them before opening the shells, so they are clean when I feed them to the chickens.

Mine girls do not eat much in the way of oyster shells but LOVE eggs shells.
