Feeding eggs back to chickens to supplement feed.

Would your husband feel better if he knew you were helping family or friends by giving them your healthy eggs, instead of them buying store bought?
My husband is actually pretty okay with the chickens although he has put a limit of 30 chickens on me which I think is reasonable. The problem we have in my area is that pretty much everyone has chickens or knows someone that has chickens and they all get their eggs from other people. Most of my family members already have chickens so selling eggs is difficult to do in my area. That's why I wanted to try and supplement the feed with eggs to try and save some money and make my chickens happier.:)

I hope my husband never see this! I know it sounds like alot but seriously my 27 chickens are my pets and i could never get rid of them. Everyone has a name and I have a serious chicken math problem. I don't mind having so many chickens or eggs I'm just trying to make sure i can find a nice way to recycle all my eggs and make make sure everyone stays healthy.
Well, you're in good company.

I have had as many as 82 birds... ALL with names. Chicken math includes ducks, goats, and so on! But I let some go so I can try others. My friends and family recognize them and know most of their names. Even had a friend cry when she found out I let go a certain hen! :love But I got to share some special birds with people who could use them... for a price of course.

And another thing... If you let go some older gals each year and add new ones, then you won't likely have to deal with birds getting old and dying. But if you don't do that then your production won't stay high forever. There may come a winter lull, so don't get caught without any eggs for yourself. :p

Mean time, that's a whole lot'a birds... I would definitely be feeding them back. Dogs like them too.

Don't forget the hard part of math for a LOT of people is subtraction. But once you learn it... whole new possibilities open up! ;)

I can't really sell eating eggs for the same reason. I had to beat my neighbors doors down to give them FREE eggs. They were too embarrassed to ask, it got old. BUT... I can sell chicks practically all day long! As fast as I can hatch them anyways. Just gotta have the right breed. :jumpy I even offer to take cockerels back for free as a community service to feed my family or pets or someone else's, not returned to my flock per bio-security... Whoever is willing to process.

You might be able to advertise on craigslist farm and garden section. Maybe someone is willing to swap some homegrown veggies, homemade soaps, or other items that might benefit you. Something like "trade my wonderful eggs for your ?? Let me know what you have to barter with".

Your the best. What a nice, insightful response!
So i have gotten rid of a few girls in the past but only to give them to friends that are starting out or so that i could have a bit more room for some new chickens. I've only been in the chicken game for 3 years now so i'm relatively new but i am obsessed.

I really like the group i have now and I would love to get into breeding but i haven't really found a breed that i like enough to just have that certain kind around. I just hatched out 4 chicks last week but they are Light Brahma x buff orpington cross mix and and i only have them because they from my favorite hen and i wanted to be able to have her babies around.

I've tried to add new chickens every year so that i dont get the winter lull, but i dont mind having the older chickens around so they can live a happy life until its time to go.

I have 2 dogs and i have never thought about feeding them eggs. Do you cook them? or just crack raw eggs into the bowl?

Thank you for all of your advice! It was really nice of you to take your time out to help me.

So, now I am going to rat myself out, and hope no one tells the city on me. I have 6 older hens, and have had 2 go broody and hatched 10 last week. :lau:lau Have had as many as 18, with one being a rooster. Some one ratted me out on the rooster after having him for four years. (he got a really good home) I am in a city that says roosters are considered exotic animals :th But you can keep 4 pets and those pets can be hens. You are limited to 4 pets no matter what kind of pets they are, as long as the total is no more than 4.

Aw, you're welcome. :hugs

They get it raw if it's dropped or broken by accident. Otherwise I scramble them or make like a scrambled pancake shape and cut into bite size strips I can feed as a treat. Our dogs get one treat everyday and they know when it't time. :D It varies, but sounds like you have plenty of animals coming along that can benefit from your extra eggs without too much fat and protein.

FYI... eggs are about 64% fat and 34% protein. :drool

I won't tell anyone! I'm lucky i live in an area where they don't limit me. I had 9 roosters at once last year!

Very few people obey this law anyway, we had a police officer who would come see our rooster, just cause he like the rooster. I know he wasn't the one who ratted me out, we actually became friends, he used to tease me about not giving me tickets when I was speeding. Said he figured I was in a hurry to get someplace :lau I am pretty sure I know which neighbor it was, she is the neighborhood PITA.

Pshh... hear the toilet flushing?

We don't talk real numbers... it makes people nervous!

In other words... I have a constant barrage of cockerels and rooster. I keep a stag pen for eating and breeding... There is a lot of crowing going on... but it comes and goes in phases... with a steady few that are always here. But I would never try to keep a crowing rooster in the city. Thing is laws are made because someone went over board in the first place. :smack

@KikisGirls Those are the same numbers I used to get my % of fat and protein in the egg. :) But just their total %'s as is... not the daily value based on a 2000 (or 1800) calorie diet for humans... just in case there was any confusion. It's interesting that with cooking the calories went down by 1. Sodium, Folate, and Choline also decreased slightly. So if you're counting calories don't eat your eggs raw.

I noticed the slight differences in the cooked vs raw too. Funny.
