Feeding Geese hay?

Ok so what kind of greens can I give my 2 geese? I have found the big bags of Kale and Turnip greens at Walmart. Are these ok? If not what kinds are good for them? They have access to grass but I do keep them penned up while I am not able to be outside with them. I don't want to lose them or something come along and grab them.

My instustustions from Dave Holderread said tender lettuce, spinach and grass. In his book (pg 105) on geese he says "summer and winter squash, Swiss Chard, kale, spinach. cabbage, potatoes, carrots. parsnips, turnips, sugar beets and mangels.

I chop up baby spring mix from Costco. Thats give a varriety of greens and red tender food.

OmaBird - Oh thank you thank you thank you. I just emailed Dave Holderread regarding his book, I can't find it on his webpage and don't want to get it from somewhere for 50+ dollars if I can get it from the source for 18 or so.

Do you have to cook the turnips? And I have absolutely no idea what a mangel is:) all the rest of this is easy to obtain and keep on hand.

I don't know what a mangel is either. You can find his book here on his site. Second book down. http://holderreadfarm.com/literature_page/literature.htm

I
think you can give it cooked or raw. If raw, grate it fine or make a it like baby food in a blender. I recomend a vita mix blender.

I tried some goodies on my 17 day old geese. So far they have eaten raw grated yukon gold potatoes, yams, carrots, zucchini, chopped flat leafed parsley, spinach, kale, romaine lettuce and spring mix. After I grate or chop it I let it float in there black rubber water dish. This keeps it fresh for them to nibble on when ever they want.

For several years we have been getting throw out produce from a local grocery store. We have been feeding it to our calves, chickens, turkeys and ducks and now that we have a pair of Sebastopol our geese. During the winter months it has been a god sent to have fresh greens for the birds. During the summer months they have all the greens they need from the garden & pastures. We have been amazed at the different things they will eat. We average getting a couple of banana boxes full a week. Some of it we have to chop up for them. Oh and if you want to see funny just bust open a soft watermelon and watch the feeding frenzy!
