We have had a mixed flock of chickens and ducks (and sometimes geese) for years, and have always fed the adults a layer feed, and raised the chicks (which we get from the local feed store) and ducklings (from Holderreads) separately so they can eat starter feed. Now we have a widowed goose (her mate died sadly in an accident shortly before the gosling hatched) and her gosling; they are living with the adult birds. It's the first time we've been lucky enough to have a bird hatched by its mother. But we are facing the problem of what to do about food. Some places online have suggested that if the gosling can eat enough grass (which it can get whenever the mom takes it outside; the adults live on an acre and can go in and out at will except at night) it's OK to let it eat layer feed; but we are anxious about the negative results of layer feed on a growing bird. Any advice?
