feeding my hens eggshells from storebought eggs.

I read on this forum that you can feed your hens eggshells as a source of calcium, what I was wondering if it's ok to feed them eggshells from store bought eggs, is it?

I don't think it would hurt them.

I think it comes down to personal preference. Not knowing exactly what those chickens were fed. But if you ate the eggs, then I would think the shells would be fine for your chickens.

My husband thinks Store Bought eggs ARE normal eggs. We've had hens for 9 months now and he still cringes when I make him breakfast with green eggs. Such a city boy.​

Store bought eggs? Um, why do you have chickens then?

They should be fine. You could always heat them in microwave if you are worried about bacteria and such.

I grew up on farm eggs. Away from home, I stopped eating them because store bought eggs just didn't taste right. Then I had some "yard eggs" from a friend. Then I got chickens. Now I'm eating eggs again.

Of course I grew up with a cow, too. Miss that fresh milk. Is there a Backyard Cow thread?

It wont hurt. If your thinking of the nutritional content of the shells, they're not as good as farm eggs but better then giving them nothing at all. Use them for now, and after they start laying switch to their egg shells.

one tip I can offer is to make sure the shells DONT look like an egg in any way shape or form.. smash them to bits first or you might find out the girls are smarter than ya think and help themselves to the eggs in the nest box.. and thats a whole new set of trouble. I let mine dry for a while them smash them up..the girls LOVE them
