feeding quail

I write nutritionally healthy right on the bag to just like purina so i should be fine. Havent lost a quail yet unlike these other poor folks who feed crumble. Now tell me this what was a chicken or quail fed before the invent of purina crumbles.seed from a farmers field. More than likely. I live in michigan harsh winters i still have very first quails i started with 4+yr old still decent layers 2-3 aweek besides winter time no light bulbs no heat besides a heated water bottle. If i wanted commercially fed birds i would buy tyson poultry from kroger.

oh ya for sure.... I have a couple hundred quail so a 50lb bag would only last me a couple weeks LOL. that will totally work, supplement calcium with small oyster shells or cuttle fish bones and they will lay just fine. I think its pretty cool that the one brand of food has instructions to cut the protein... I read the entire thread after posting...

have a good one
What you are probably reading for cutting protein is for game birds or quail that are used for hunting. The lower protein slims the birds down for flight so they are more "sport" to hunt than a quail raised for meat or eggs. For optimal production, large sized eggs, and meaty carcass the higher protein feeds are best. And yes free feed a source of calcium or the quality of your egg shells will suffer.
