feeding quail

I just got off the phone with Purina Customer Service. The 30% Gamebird Starter has NOT been discontinued. I was told that it has been renamed to Gamebird and Turkey Starter, and is non-medicated. The ordering code, which I was told did not change, is #0001381. I hope that helps!

Hi, I have been struggling to find feed (in bulk and that is not medicated). I have finally come across a supplier who sells a Game Bird Starter at 28% protein and is not medicated. I am going to buy and use this for my chicks but was wondering if it would be appropriate to keep my mature coturnix quail on this high of protein full time?

The supplier also sells a Red Hen Chick that is not medicated at 23% protein suitable to quail, should I get this one to use for my mature quail instead?

I have read that too high of protein (long term) can cause death which I want to avoid. I have also considered purchasing both and doing a 1 part Game Bird Starter and 2 part Red Hen Chick for my mature quail. My quail do get meal worms/greens/fruits/vegetables every few days or so but their main feed is the protein feed.

Any advice would be great.

If you feed seeds remember to give your birds grit so their gizzards can grind them up. Sand, or "health grit" works. You can throw some in their feed and also offer it in a separate dish. If they are just eating commercial feed they don't need it.

its called Purina Gamebird Startena, and most definitely was not discontinued or renamed??? the CCrep must have been confused... I feed the startena 30% up until the coturnix are 7 weeks then switch right to Purina Gambird Layena 20% to my layers, extra males are fed scratch mixed with turkey finisher for another couple weeks until processed. I get an egg a day from every hen, fertility and hatch rate is darn near 100%. I breed the James Marie Jumbo line and the Texas A&M coturnix aswell as California Valley Quail.

A wise man once told me, "let the experts make the feed, theres many years of research behind them."

Thanks Yellowherb. Any advice on what type of seed? There are so many to choose from...
My birds get left over parakeet or cockatiel seed. I've kept feeding the 30% on demand but toss down a handful of seed which they think is ambrosia. I don't have a ton of quail (16 buttons, 6 coturnix adults, 1 bob), they all enjoy the seed though. When the tiels are eating you can find the quail under them to get what they drop.

This is the truth, but on a small scale and having to buy 50lbs of feed at a time, 1 bag would last my adults far longer than it's nutrients would last in the bag. So for a small number of quail like mine, it's easier to cut the crumble with seeds rather than having 2 50lb bags of different feeds.
