Feeding Wild Birds

Both turkeys were back again today. I purposely spilled some bird seed on the ground 'just in case'.
They like BOSS and cracked corn. The ones that were here moved in with a neighbor a half mile to the east. He says they go right in his buildings and are eating his own turkeys' food.

The hen that tried to join mine was run off by the heritage hens. They were highly insulted by that hussy's flirting with their toms.

Dead 'song' sparrow on the deck this morning - must have crashed into the sliding deck doors. Two hen turkeys at the home feeder. Both may have been banded. Couldn't tell for sure as they left before I got my glasses. Someone from fish and game stopped in at the club, and apparently some birds have been outfitted with tracking devices. They were given my phone number. Hopefully they contact me.

First turkey to appear was banded on her right leg. When I next saw a banded bird, she was banded on her left leg. I assumed I had made a mistake. Well, they are at the feeder now, and one is banded on her right leg and the other is banded on her left leg. Feathers between their wings are slightly elevated - I'm guessing those are the tracking devices. They are very hungry. Possibly they were trapped somewhere else and don't know where to find feed around here? I'll take care of them.

Turkeys were at the home feeder early this morning. They alerted and hurried off. I watched as a fox stalked a squirrel feeding on the ground beneath the feeders. Instead of climbing the tree nearby, the squirrel ran across the back lawn and nearly got caught. All this while a herd of deer was browsing further back. I love where I live.
