Feeding Wild Birds

On Friday and Saturday the Weaver bird was back to nest building.

At first I thought it was this Cape weaver (Ploceus capensis)...

But it turns out to be this guy, a Masked weaver (Ploceus velatus)...

The top arrow is pointing to the Weaver nest; the middle arrow is pointing to the bird feeder; and the bottom arrow is pointing to the window which I look out of over the birdbath from my desk...

Not a wild bird story but still silly. So yesterday I had a root canal done (super fun of course  ) but it just happened to be in the town where my parents live. Mom called me right after and asked if I could maybe, possibly stop by her house and help with a bird problem... My cousin comes up from Washington DC to visit my parents a few times a year and he has a young African grey parrot named Tina who is always with him. Well this time, his parents came along who just happened to be home visiting from Peru. They have no experience with miss Tina. The boys went skiing so Tina had to stay at the house and since they don't bring a full cage with them, she was in a small travel carrier. My mom and aunt tried to give her some water and being the smarty pants that she is, she took advantage of the situation and escaped the carrier. Apparently, my mom (NOT a bird person) and my aunt (Tiny little Peruvian lady with no experience with Tina) were trying for 2 hours to get her to go back in the carrier. Tina was having nothing to do with it and was outsmarting their every move and ignoring every bribe that led towards the cage. It doesn't help that both ladies are a bit afraid of her lol. Now, I'm known in the family for understanding and getting along well with animals and Tina and I get along but she already knew what the goal was by the time I got there so she was leary of me too but I got her a walnut and managed to convince her to get on my hand. After that, I just let her have a bite and since she was occupied and busy holding on to that little piece of walnut, I just slipped her in the carrier and gave her the rest of it as a reward. It took me 5 minutes lol. Here's the guilty brat that teased and taunted my mom and aunt for a few hours Haha!

Parrots are extremely intelligent, she knew what she was doing, taunting people. 😂 She's adorable! ❤️
