Feeding Wild Birds

Your cardinals eat Safflower seed? I wish mine did!

Yes. They sit and eat for long periods of time. I think some of the smaller birds (nuthatches, titmice, chickadees) also eat safflower. The tube feeders are filled with black oil sunflower seeds.

Titmice absolutely do, they’re some of my safflower suet feeder’s best customers. I’ve seen chickadees and nuthatches too, and juncos and some hairy (?) woodpeckers.

We have Downy and Red-bellied woodpeckers here. They eat the peanut butter suet blocks, but also eat the BOSS in the tube feeders.

Went to TSC and bought corn. Feeding BOSS and birdseed to that many turkeys is too expensive. On my way to the club to fill bird feeders and do a predator check.

We feed scratch grains to our wild birds rather than bird seed because of the cost. They seem to love it. We also put out BOSS, a squirrel trail mix and corn cobs. Yep, we feed squirrels and birds.

I've been getting BOSS at Menard's for $19 for 50 lbs. when it's on sale. Their cracked corn is $11 for 50 lbs.

Our squirrels here are quite chubby, they eat bird seed that falls from the feeders or gets swept from the feeders by those annoying blue jays. We put out a lot of suet for wood peckers and any bird that will go after it. We have Downy, Hairy, Red bellied, Pileated. We also put out black oil sunflower and a seed mix for the Juncos and Finches.

A lot of Purple finch have hung around all winter, they usually are just fall and spring. And the Juncos all winter this year, though not as many as come through spring and fall.

Chickadees and Nuthatch always, and the annoying Blue jays.
Crows too, I love them. Cardinals, don't see many these days/years.
Turkeys, now and then... as the ice starts to melt we'll see Bald eagles daily. Trumpeter swans too, all them looking for fish that didn't make it through the winter.
