Feeding Wild Birds

Shortbeard showed up with two 'new' hens. The resident hens strongly objected to their presence and much fighting and chasing took place. Phoebes at the club are actively checking out last year's nest site. I have installed 8 new bird boxes at the club.

Much turkey activity in the back yard this morning. 3 toms strutting and fanning and 7 hens - some of them enamored. 2 squatted and were mated. @R2elk there was one hen in the flock who fanned and strutted the entire time they were here. Is there any significance to this?

Normal behavior. I suspect that jealousy may be the basis.

My day for seeing things. Black squirrel on the beagle club lane and a ringneck cockbird crossing my front lawn - the first ringneck I have seen in several years. Likely a survivor of a semi wild club. Turkey flock came back, and 3 jakes were with them - tagging along on the back of the flock.

My dominant hens will strut and peck the head of the junior hen being bred. Usually it's a yearling hen being bred.
