Feel bad for chickens out in the rain/wind/cold!

We open the Chicken Barn Door early afternoon and leave the door open. They go out into the yard. Yesterday it was raining and near dusk. They walked in. I went down and closed the barn door.

We are NEW with Silkie Chickens and they have got a routine. Out early in early. They are so smart. Are you serious about the Oatmeal? I am interested in treats ideas. Aria

Last winter on really cold days, I cooked oatmeal, added scrambled eggs, left over cornbread, yogurt, hot pepper flakes - they will attack you for a treat like that. My hubby would get up, sniff, and say, "Mmm that smells good. Must be for the chickens."

I don't cook his breakfast so he knew it wasn't for him.

Somebody suggested getting a flock block for cold weather . Sounded like a good idea.I got one for around ten bucks. Our weather started out cool but has been around 90 everyday. Wish it would cool down but who knows.

Its cold, windy and rainy here too. 40 degrees and 50 mph winds. My poor banties are blowing all over the place. I have been known to let them in the basement to a have a treat or 2. This morning I went to let them out of their coop and walked back towards the house (about 200 ft away from the coop is the house) They all followed me to the back door then sat there and gave me the sad puppy dog eyes until I gave them some hard boiled eggs.

The flock blocks are great in the winter but boy they sure do stink!

Well now, I'm glad I didn't buy one the other day then! I don't want my garage reeking, and that's where it would get used!

okay -- so what is flock block?

I don't mind them out in the cold and rain during the day, they can move around and find some sort of shelter if they like. What I hate is mine do not go into a coop -- instead they roost in trees. I hate the nights when it is cold and rainy I feel so bad for them. Last year they started roosting in the garage, I did not have the heart to close the garage door so they couldn't go into the garage. my DH hated it because they made such a mess -- well I cleaned the mess up he didn't not sure what he was complaining about.
