Feeling sad... Update on Beau post 38

Thanks to each of you. I am trying not to be a mope about at work and go on about him...plus I start to cry when I think about it. Nice to have some understanding ears (eyes

). Our vet warned us that labs are youthful for a long time but when they get old it happens suddenly...as it has with our Beau.

It is very, very true. If your dog is getting an upset stomach, my vet gave my dog a shot and a pill to help him keep some food down. Once the "cycle" of eat then throw up was broken, he started getting back into the groove.

Once he went downhill though, it was immediate. There was no going back and I was not going to put him through the suffering path that might have given me a few more days with him. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. It is heartbreaking to go through it time and time again with animals.

I have a very soft spot in my heart for labs. I have a feeling I will ALWAYS have a Lab.​

I have a chow mix that I love dearly. She isn't a dog, she is a family member and she is pusing 14 years old. Lately she has been ill. She can hold down regular dog food most of the time but feed her any scraps and they are back up in no time. Even dog treats don't set well. Her artheritis is getting worse and it's hard for her to get up on the couch where she used to sleep. It's her couch. She actually slipped twice going up the steps to the house this past week. She can hardly hear or see. She just hasn't been herself at all besides the signs of aging. The bad part is we can't afford to take her to the vet. We have never been in the position where we can't get our animals to the vet but with neither of us working it's impossible. We always buy feed for our animals before we buy any for ourselves. They provide food for us with eggs and quail meat. We just processed 19 meaties tonight. Times are hard for everybody. I just wish I could get my best friend to the vet. I know it's just old age but I would like to know if she is suffering. I don't want her to suffer. That day will be the hardest day ever for me. I can't even think about it without tears.

Sorry to hear that. . . my Boxer is sick now, too. We came home from vacation since she was having seizures. It was horrible to watch and she is not herself anymore.

We are in the same situation

Ours is 13, and we went a few weeks ago for the cough. He is on meds and doing much better.
I hope things are ok

I had to put down one of my best friends and best hunting companions I have ever had. When we would come home from a long day in the field, she would stretch out on the front seat of the pickup, lay her head on my lap, look up as if to say "It was a good day today Dad" and go to sleep just like that. I waited too long to put her down. Being selfish I wanted to keep her with me as long as possible. She had already had a stroke or maybe too. We live far out so could not get her to a vet that night. I layed with her on the floor all night long as she cried and whimpered trying to sooth her. It was the longest night of my life and it was almost 8 years ago. I still have not had the heart to get another dog. Please, when you know it is there time, take them in. Don't let them suffer as Josie did because you want to keep them for one more day.

Well...crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. Beau had a fever so is on antibiotics...blood sugar was a bit low which our vet feels probably accounts for the seizures combined with what looks like an infection in his throat (accounting for the coughing). The rest of the blood work comes back tomorrow. Still doesn`t have a labattite but is eating scrambled eggs and Mama`s homemade stew with some coaxing. And no more seizures....
