OK now see, I soent the first 5 years of my life in a small town, then lived in the country on a farm till I was 13, then lived in a bigger city till I was 21, and now live in po-dunk again. So, I understand the friendly/nosey neighbor bit, waving at everyone who drives by, stopping in unannounced, all that. But after spending 8 years in a rough Wyoming town, I know I come across to these rural MN folk as rude, because I do have a lot of the "i take care of mine and you take care of yours" survival habits that come from living in a place like that. I dont make eye contact with strangers, I dont drive by the neighbors place slowly to check out the lawn, where I am from being "friendly/nosey" is an invitation to get shot! But, I also wouldnt leave half my yard for the neighbor to mow, get help from them and not return the favor, or ask for anything without paying or trading. THere is a line between the city mentality and selfishness and it sounds to me like you have a bunch of selfish shelfish hanging around!
