Good relations with neighbors is important and the dog didn't cause a lot of damage this time. I would talk to the neighbor and explain what happened. I am not saying threaten them, but let them know that if the dog is on your property and attacks your birds/livestock at some point in the future you will be forced to take action. Don't be rude about it, but be firm. They may be reckless owners or this may have been a one time deal. Feuding with neighbors is a huge headache, so just remain calm and all should be well.

In place of "bird" or "chicken" or "livestock" use "CHILD". Still willing to give that killing pooch a second chance??
I completely understand loving your pet. I really "LIKE" mine.

But, she IS a German Shepherd and she won't get ANY chances to harm anyone/thing unless shes in the act of proctecting me and mine. Which she is VERY good at.

Like I said earlier in this thread, since when have animals, especially dogs and cats become equal or superior to a human life?? The only good chicken killin' (any livestock) dog, cat, coon, possum, etc, is one thats buried deep.

I agree that something else needs to be done once a dog has attacked or killed. It doesn't seem that her neighbor's dog has done this in the past. It sounded like the dog saw birds and ran down hill just to learn about the fence. Looks like the dog was not to familiar with the neighbor's property. So I think the owner should get a chance. A dog will not automatically advance to attacking children once it goes after a bird. We would have very tight rules on hunting dogs, if that would be true. BTW my "aggressive" dog is a German Sheppard mix. She only gets aggressive in the kennel towards other dogs. Never did anything at petsmart to other dogs. So we think it is the stress of going into the kennel. I do trust her around my ducks. The cat actually bites her feet and she thinks it is ok. Very funny to watch. We are actually going for walks on our 22 acreas with 13 ducks and 4 dogs off leash. Never had an issue. We always socialize our dogs to our birds once they hatch. To them its family. We have our property completely fenced so they cannot go over to the neighbor 1/4 mile away.

Did you even think about what you posted? WHO can’t be trusted? WHO say “I have never had a problem with them ever." Think maybe the owner of a Pit that attacks may be trying to cover their own but? There are thousands of Pits that are well keep and well handled that NEVER do harm. But there are “stupid people” (lots of them) doing stupid things with Pits.

I trusted our Pit with my children and other animals and she never let me down. I have a friend that also had a Pit I fully trusted. Its statements like yours the fuel the myth that ALL Pits are bad.

Ever hear of a chicken attacking a child? Ever hear of a goose taking a child’s eye out? I have! Does the mean all chickens and geese are not to be trusted. I DON’T THINK SO.

"I go for one warning then bodybag." Now I will agree with that because if it happens again you’re dealing with stupid people and the threat must be neutralized.

just remember you cant solve everthing by just killing for some chicks. now self defence is a diffrent story. you have people that get all wound up if there neighbors child walks over into there property or leaves a toy on there property and feel they have the right to shoot that childs father over that....think first. i hate when i have save someones life after being shot for the most dumbest things. it become a little war cause if your neighbor finds out you shot his dog, and he loves his dog like it was one of his kids he might just come after you and it happens ive seen it.....anyway its just my opinion

I have been wondering this lately also. Seeing it more and more....

neighbor issues can be SO difficult......good luck.
I'd scan the classifieds for a used electric fencer. They are great deterrents. My own dog put his nose on the wire when I wasn't looking....now she stays about 40 feet back from the coop. Poor bugger, tough lesson.

You absolutely can not trust a pitbull

on the flip side no pitbull can trust a human. This is what happens to THEM at human hands

Nice people that did that huh? She was abused, hurt, in pain, had no social dog skills, was kept chained and isolated. I can only imagine what her first year of life was like, take a few seconds and try to imagine how that would be if you were in her place. scary huh?

Lucky 3 years later

You can still see her human inflicted scar, right under her collar. We have worked and worked with her for over 2 years now and she still doesn't trust people. wow can you ever wonder why? Not all Pitbulls are baby eating, rip your face off monsters nor are any other of the "killer" breeds. A lot of people should look into a mirror to see a real scary monster.

I would talk to the neighbor and also invest in a bottle of Citronella essential oil. Saturate some rags and hang them around your coop.....I'm telling you now that I've never in my life seen such a strong dog deterrent as this stuff.....my dogs won't even come across the yard to me if I have it on my hands. They act like it is absolute poison to them and will do anything to avoid getting near it.

They are now using citronella in bark deterrent collars and it is said it works way better than the shock collars for this purpose.

Who knows? The oil may even deter other predators....it won't even need renewed after rain, once this stuff is on a piece of cloth it just cannot be washed out, even if you try.

The owner should be made aware of the incident and given an opportunity to manage the animal.

That being said, personally, I will not tolerate any aggressive dog on my property, and no pit bull (aggressive or not).

I have friends who have had pit bulls for years who were "big babies", but I have also seen what they can do to other dogs and livestock.

When they start on something, they are like the Terminator; they will not stop and they are super strong with vice-like jaws. No amount of pain will dissuade them in the least once the switch is flipped.
