Unfortunately the terrier is the Doberman of the 21 century.

And you rarely hear of Dobermans being in the news mauling folks. We used to raise AKC Dobes and many were frightened of them when I was a kid. I can't remember the last time I heard stories of them biting anyone. Most Dobe owners don't let their dogs roam at large, but also, they are not as popular as they used to be.
Any dog can do damage to humans and chickens. Small dogs just do damage lower on your body and with smaller teeth, but they are faster. Large dogs of any breed in a killing frenzy can do some real hurt on you or your chickens and can be harder to stop due to their sheer size and strength.

Thats true, Cyn, but the problem with pitts is the extreme damage they will do. Ive been bit by a rottie, and it hurt, but he bit and let go. Pitts dont let go; a friend of mine had her arm nearly torn off by a pitt, who wouldnt let go. It was awful. I dont think the issue is that dogs dont bite, they do, even little ones bite, but they bite and let go. Pitts dont. They are bred not to.

I understand the nature of that dog, but folks, this story wasn't about a pitbull attack, per se; at least that wasn't the main slant, the way I read it. Could have been any big strong dog. We have to moderate almost every thread where that breed is mentioned as the perpetrator and it's Sunday and I'm the only one around, it seems, so go easy on me, huh?

*I see Jody is on at the moment, too, thank goodness, LOL.

Cynthia, you are amazing; so smart and keeping us on track - I think I want to be you when I grow up!!! (And I mean that)

I don't care what breed a dog is a bite is a bite. I was attacked by a doberman. when I was a child and the owner had other breeds that where just as bad. I was terrified of dobermans until my DH had one show up where he worked he brought it home because it was injured and the pound would have put her to sleep I said I would get her shots fix her up and find her a home I did she lived with me until she was 14 and had to be put to sleep due to breast cancer I miss that dog to this day I learned a very powerful lesson its the owner not the dog that makes the dog what it is. Sadie did bite anyone that tried to get into the house when they were uninvited had a few friends that just liked to walk in they learned not to she bite them in the butt. so they learned to knock which is good for me and the kids. now I asked the sheriff about that and they said if someone was stupid enough to break in with dogs barking they were stupid enough to get hurt. just keep up on the rabies shots and i was fine. so now I make sure that all my dogs are trained I still take in abused animals and they make the best pets.

Just throwing this out for consideration......

I think it would be wise of people not to name the breed of dog harassing their chickens.
Unfortunately, when aggressive type breeds are mentioned, the thread almost instantly degenerates into arguments and opinions about those breeds. Hijacking a thread is not playing fair.

If the neighbors dog is eating your chickens, it doesn't really matter if it's a poodle or a pit.
It's a dog that must be stopped.
Had our original poster had left out the name of the breed, I bet this thread would have gone down a much smoother path.

Alway do the right thing first. Tell the dog owners what happen. Be nice and don`t make any threats. It is the owners fault not the dog,the dog is just doing what dogs do. Hopefully they will be understanding and take care of the matter . I had the same problem. The dog just wanted to play but it scared the hell out of my birds.(they are just babies)This is what I did.The next time the dog is out of it`s yard make it your friend feed it some Dulcolax (The pills not chocolate bars)wrapped in cheese.(DO NOT TRY TO HAND FEED IF YOU LIKE YOUR HAND)In about 6 hours when it is back in its owners house it will get the runs and the owners will think it ate something that was bad while it was roaming the great outdoors and put alittle more effort in keeping the dog in it own yard.Do it every time you see the dog IN YOUR YARD.I did this a few times befor he got the hint. The dog owner finally had an invisable fence installed . I have not seen the dog since. I would have to mention here that if this situation would have not been resolved. Then the dog gotta go. Who knows maybe the doggie relocation program or maybe a sleepy burger. Pitbull`s sculls are like boulders. You do not want the dog to scurry home with bullet holes in it . Then things could get messy.
