Fencing Woes- Keeping out Elk

I wish I could use electric fences, it would give me sadistic delight to zap the buggers. The ground isn't damp enough here for the grounding rods to ground properly, they'd have to be dampened with a drip system or something. Perhaps if I use screws or perhaps lag bolts and conduit straps?
You can wire alternating strands hot & ground. As long as the animal touches 2 adjacent strands it will get shocked.

I alternate hot and ground. Has detered the neighbors hog-hunting dogs, and the hogs they were hunting. Turkey can fly right over it - but I've not had any visit since establishing my flock two years ago. Deer can bound over it too - I only went 4' high, but mostly don't.
