Feral chickens

Thanks for the suggestion. That's a breed I haven't tried. How are they different from the English games?

American games (referred to simply as games) were indicated by several others earlier in thread. They are a blend based mostly of games from Britain Britain (often called same as Old English but I do not know how Irish games fit in other than they are part of mix), games the Spaniards brought over and various forms of the Oriental stuff, some of which was mixed with European games before brought to U.S. If speaking as a biologists, then American games repressent a hybrid swarm with strongest influence coming from Great Britain.

Old English (pure if such critters still exist) as I understand them run a little smaller than American games. Like Old English games, American games are relatively cold tolerant, excellent foragers and model parents.

To put my mouth in perspective, I used to think my line was pure Old English and too good to have been sullied by the Oriental stocks. I was wrong finding the polluting genes were very diluted but still present.

Saladin should prove a better source on historical perspective as to what consitutes an American game and how it compare with the Old English game.

Whether "true" or not, we do have feral chickens in Hawaii. Mostly on Kauai, where the mongoose introduction was initially foiled by a sensible man who knew what they would do to the native birds and tossed the crate of mongoose in the harbor when they arrived. My point, however, is that they thrive where there is cover - dense underbrush and trees. If you have that, you have some chance. Here our main predators are dogs, and they are a real problem. I gave up my free range dreams and got an electric mesh run.see my byc page.

yes, Kauai, most beautiful place on Earth too. If you look at these feral chickens on Kauai (picture I took), they look very Game-like:

I spent a week there watching them and the other wild pheasants. The feral chickens did not seem to fly much and where I visited, roosters were more abundant than hens.
