FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Leave your lid cracked- it will get it from the air. You only need feed+ water+ time.

I left it cracked a bit. I didn't want it to explode!
( I love making sour dough bread- same principle!)

Not sure what sweet 16 is but ACV is apple cider vinegar- you will want to use the kind with "mother" in it.
You might know already, but you don't need anything besides your feed and water to start the fermenting process. :) ACV is just an added

thanks so much I really like to take care of my girls

CC, I hope you don't leave this thread. I find your input and experience quite interesting and valuable. As I do find Bee's.

That said, I am not a very good scientist. But I do know that you ran a very good experiment. It's puzzling that it sounds like both you and Bee have done similar experiments and the results do not match up. Why? Why? The results of any single experiment would be considered notable yet inconclusive until the same experiment was ran again and again and again and again. With different breeds of chickens even perhaps. I admire the scientific process, but I find it boring and time consuming. That's just my subjective opinion of it which bears no weight on its usefulness. But the danger of such a process is drawing conclusions prematurely. In fact, some of the original "research" that showed the dangers of cholesterol and saturated fats is not only being discredited for very poor scientific method that was "bought" by powers that be BUT also is being proven as healthful and necessary components of human nutrition. Which is quite the opposite from what the popular thought has been for 30-40 years.

I have food out for my chickens all the time they seem to eat let`s because it is always there and they know it

Hello,
I just found this thread. I have 4 wk old babies. 2 Silkies, 1 Buff O, 1 Bk Austorlop, 2 Cockoo Marans, 1 EE. I stared to make them Mash aka FF a few days ago. They love it. I use their chick feed of Scratch & Peck. After reading this thread I just added ACV and a bit of brown sugar. Can't wait to see what that does to the mix.

thanks to all of you never to old to learn something new I really do think you would waste less food

jerrey, I'm older but still learning on all this. So many threads to read. I've been on here for 7 mo and still a newbie with my first chicks 2 wks old. But I've been paying attention and getting supplies and things so I'm ready

Clankeyes, good to have you. You only have to get FF going the first time and then when it's almost at the bottom just add water, stir and start adding more grains. My babies are 2 wks old and are so much fun. And don't they LOVE the fermented feed......

Yep, I got in it with both hands! It kept growing so I kept adding water until I kind of had a soupy mix. I may need more water tomorrow. I added a little unsulfured molasses, maybe a 1/8-1/4 cup
just as a sugar to encourage yeast growth.

I could be wrong but I think that may be too much sugar for chickens. I'd stay on the low end of that, 1/4 or less. There's already natural sugars in the grain. Keep us informed as to how it works.

Molasses is used in chickens as a laxative to flush poisons.

I wouldn't add any sugar. Completely empty calories. It will ferment just fine without added sugar. Seriously- all that's needed is feed + water + time with the lid cracked.
