FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Pics
Mandaleigh, I've got 10 4 week old cuckoo marans in my brooder right now. This is my first batch of babies to be on FF strictly from the start. I've kinda had them on a continuous basis - mainly because we've been so crazy busy lately. But if I see their bowls empty during the day, I don't immediately fill them up. Especially as they are getting older, I'm starting to let them go a little longer without making sure the bowls are tipped off. But if I'm feeding everyone else, and they still have some in the bowl, then I just plop a little more on top so that way I don't have to worry about it later.

If you don't feed continuous, then I would do once in the morning and once in the late afternoon/evening.

I can't wait for these buggers to get to the point that they can free range with the rest! Then they'll just be on once a day schedule like the others. :)

I appreciate you answering, I know it sounds like a DUH question, but I know we always let them eat constantly when they were babies, and they were always starving! Greedy little buggers. I can already tell the difference in my birds hunger levels. I fed them the normal amount, and they ate half. Well, I took out the normal bucket of leftovers that I do every other day and they barely picked at it. And it was noodles and bread crusts (my kids want em cut off

) Amazing!

Bee, going to be starting the new chicks on FF right away. They should be here Thursday!

Anyhow, what do you think would be best on offering the FF? Keep it on demand for the babies like the dry feed? Or a limited amount? Anyone else who has fed FF to their chicks I would love to hear your thoughts and results as well! Thanks!

I feed twice a day on new meaty chicks and layer chicks but just in different amounts. So I dole out enough in the morning to take through til I feed the big birds in the evening and then feed the chicks in the brooder again so they have a little feed in the night. After 2 wks, layer chicks are out on free range and eating once a day with the big dogs! Meaty chicks still get twice a day rations until around 4 wks and then it goes to once a day.

And it was noodles and bread crusts (my kids want em cut off  )  Amazing!

What is it with kids and bread crusts?!? Mine are the same way. REFUSE to eat the stupid crust. At least the chickens appreciate it...

Hey, Bee - I believe someone mentioned to you already that you've been named an honorary Texan on the Texas thread? Well, that stands, but even as an honorary Texan I would not suggest looking up the Texas thread. People are crabby over there lately. I blame it on the heat.

(added that little smiley because Rosemarie gets such a kick out of it!). I didn't even know that anyone in TX gave a hill of beans who I was and I am deeply honored and humbled by it. Ever since I was old enough to dream, I always wanted to be a cowboy...yeeeeeeee-haw!!!! I will not mosey over to the thread if folks are as cranky as a rattler with no rattle but please tell them I am as pleased as mule eatin' persimmons!

Yes, all of us over here just love you to pieces! My father in law is from West Virginia; I told the ladies over in the Texas thread that I quickly blamed my children not wearing shoes on his hillbilly blood. You know, he is one of my favorite people; grew up in the woods quite literally.
Yes the people on there are all cranky; mainly because if you mention anything about eliminating predators you promptly get a lecture on how cruel it is to kill them, and then we got one on evolution that I could barely take. I managed not to say anything too ugly, though others were not as patient unfortunately. Which is amazing considering how impatient I usually tend to be.
Thank you two for your input on the chickadees. Very excited to get them!

Sounds like a real hootinanny over there! They wear shoes in Texas?? Oh..yeah...boots. My bad..forgot all the prickly things they have in TX.

Well, bless your little hearts for loving an old wind bag like me! It makes my day, I tell ya.

Those who think it's cruel to shoot predators must not really live in the country, nor have seen what those preds can do to a bird. Cruel doesn't enter into it one bit...territory does. Any apex predator will kill off any rivals for food in a certain territory and that's just natural. Especially if they are hunting for the same game in that territory...no competition for that prey will be tolerated by a territorial predator. And us humans are VERY territorial. Anyone who feels differently has been asleep in history class.

From where I'm standing, the one with the gun is the apex predator and it has nothing to do with cruelty, just food competition. Things get scarce down at the Walmart one day folks are going to see the definition of that real quick and in a hurry, as one human has to guard food supplies from another. People have just been soft and squishy for so long now they are generations removed from survival of the fittest. "Cruelty" is just one famine away from the doorstep.

I'm on my phone, so can't insert the cute big thumbs up guy - so I'll just be old fashioned and spell it out:

BIG THUMBS UP!

There I did it for you! We store food and can whatever we are able to. Preparedness is our first rule! And I am glad to say country folks are still anything but squishy around here; as Hank Jr. said, country folks can survive.
