FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Hi there :)

I'm new to all this, but very interested in fermenting feed for our chicks that are coming soon. I wasn't sure what type of chick starter would work best--grain chick starter (Scratch & Peck) or crumble starter like Nature's Best organic/Purina organic.

Would love any help!

Hi there and congrats on your new chicks.
I use a crumble starter for my chicks.
My local feed store carries a M-G brand and it seems to work great.

Thanks! Can you ferment the crumble the same way you would grains? I'm new to all this and am a bit overwhelmed!

Yes!

I used a large mouth mason jar at first....
I put maybe a cup of crumbles in it and a dash of AVC, filled it with water just aBOVE the feed....waited a little while and added some more water.
At first I was adding too much water...it was too soupy for my chicks.
They like it better when it's at an oatmeal like consistency.

I leave it on my kitchen counter with a paper towel covering it and through out the day I give it a stir.

I just started a new batch....my new chicks with be coming on Thursday!

Thank you! This is so helpful! Do you also put ACV in the water?

VITTLES!!!!!!!! <grin>
I've got a deal with an old boyhood friend of mine. I don't hunt, but he does. The deal is he hunts some property of mine and it's one for him and one for me, one for him and one for me... I'll have to tell him to start saving me some scraps and guts...that oughta mess with his head a bit....we are *old* friends so he'll just figure it's one of my tangents. LOL Thinking about it, what would the good organs be for the chickens?...heart, liver,...???

Anything soft and not with a lot of fascia...liver is good, heart is too firm and full of tendon for them to peck out pieces. Anything on the deer where they can peck off small pieces that are easily digested.

That's a really good deal! I "charge" anyone hunting our land a haunch only. Last fall, first day of bow season, they harvested 4 nice bucks, so I had 4 haunches to can up and one son even shared his tenderloin with us that day. I also managed to wrangle a neck roast or two.
