Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I know...he's finally getting a tail and he's been behaving himself in regards to confronting humans, but he's mean to the younger girls, who are older than him~ but he's vicious towards them. I usually cull for temperament in my flocks anyway and ol' BUD has two strikes against him, not to mention I don't need another rooster, particularly not a mixed up mutt cross like him. He's spunky and that's about all he has going for him right now, which isn't enough to earn a winter's feeding.

Well, I guess he could only stay an unchicken for so long...He really has been entertaining to read about though!

what is it about FF that makes chickens crazy for it? a day or so ago i started my first batches of FF and today my 8 week old chicks have gotten small amounts a couple of times...the first time they weren't to sure but now when they see me coming with the container they charge the door and its hard to get in to give it to them. is FF chicken crack? glad they like it though and i didnt end up wasting the feed

SAVE BUD! SAVE BUD! SAVE BUD! SAVE BUD! hehehe

We'll have an auction and auction him off to the highest bidder so that he can live somewhere they have diapers and "treats".

I know! I don't know if it's because the feed actually has a taste instead of being dry and mildly sweet? I've heard bugs have that sour, tangy taste and maybe it's reminiscent of bug flavor? I have some old hens who were raised on dry layer mash for the better part of their lives and just got the FF for this last year and they literally haunt the FF bucket when I go to feed...I've never had to push them out of the way before this method of feeding, but every day I have to push one head or another out of the FF so that I can feed.

First real snow that stuck to the ground and trees...not deep, but very wet and very beautiful!

Every branch and twig is laced with pure white and gives the woods a fairy dream scape appearance.

Some of the young chickens and the cat have never seen snow and they are not amused...I can read their feathery little minds, "WHERE have all the leaves, grass, and tasty bugs gone???". The cat is simply disgusted about getting his paws wet and cold, the big sissy.

I'm jealous...no snow here. Ever.

Do you have any snow covered pics? Would love to see! (I could live vicariously!) lol

We got about 6 inches here. I just came in from shoveling the girls run. The pop door never opened. My friend stopped and scrapped the solar panel off. I think I will need to get the electric hook up for winter. :/

The big girls came right out. The tots just poked their heads out and went back in. I got some scratch and threw it on the ground. That got everyone out :) poor tots don't know what to make of the snow. Edie ate some scratch that had snow in it and she spit it back out :D sooner or later she will figure out she can eat the snow like the big girls do. Sophie with her feathered feet was walking thru the snow. She is going to be the envy of the others with her feather boots to keep her feet warm :)

Jesnflock I will get some pics when my feet warm up. I really need some insulated muck boots

No pics of today's snow but I certainly have snow covered pics from the past.

When it's a particularly lovely snow I'll often take pics just because it has to be seen to be believed. I don't consider it pic worthy unless the snow is much deeper than today's offering, though it is rather beautiful to look down through all the woods and see white on black, brown and grey. We've only got an inch or so on the ground here so you can still see some grass poking up. I think that might be all we get today and the sun will be out tomorrow so it will be gone in a jiffy.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!!

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Have a great day everyone!

Lisa :)
