Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

what is it about FF that makes chickens crazy for it?  a day or so ago i started my first batches of FF and today my 8 week old chicks have gotten small amounts a couple of times...the first time they weren't to sure but now when they see me coming with the container they charge the door and its hard to get in to give it to them.  is FF chicken crack?  glad they like it though and i didnt end up wasting the feed

That's funny! LOL My boyfriend says that I have made alcoholics out of my chickens. lol We are in the process of finishing up a new coop/run. The boyfriend thought the door to the run needed to swing out to help keep predators from pushing it in. I said nooo, it has to swing in because I have to push them back just to get in the door. LOL "Chicken crack!" LOL I have been bit several times trying to get the ff in the feeder. Got it from one of my younger chickens 3-4 days ago. Grrrr! The other day one of the older birds grabbed the big spoon I dish it out with and tried to take it away from me! LOL

I had popcorn last night!

And the fire is truly delightful...almost hypnotic and makes one want to drowse the day away. I'll make some homemade bread today from some fresh ground red turkey wheat from the 70s and will be washing jars for canning up old chickens this weekend so we can have truly homemade chicken soup. But, first....a good sit by the fire with a good book and a listen to the silence, the beautiful, blessed silence. The animals are fed, the wood is in the house and the world in encased in soft, white silence out there...bliss!

We got about 6 inches here. I just came in from shoveling the girls run. The pop door never opened. My friend stopped and scrapped the solar panel off. I think I will need to get the electric hook up for winter.

The big girls came right out. The tots just poked their heads out and went back in. I got some scratch and threw it on the ground. That got everyone out

poor tots don't know what to make of the snow. Edie ate some scratch that had snow in it and she spit it back out

sooner or later she will figure out she can eat the snow like the big girls do. Sophie with her feathered feet was walking thru the snow. She is going to be the envy of the others with her feather boots to keep her feet warm

Jesnflock I will get some pics when my feet warm up. I really need some insulated muck boots

WoW That's Awesome! We are at maybe 64* (not that I like the cold mind you, being a Florida girl, but I do enjoy a good snow fall once in a while) We probably won't get really cold til December... Can't wait to see your pics armorfirelady!

(I do understand the need to thaw out though lol)
No pics of today's snow but I certainly have snow covered pics from the past.

When it's a particularly lovely snow I'll often take pics just because it has to be seen to be believed. I don't consider it pic worthy unless the snow is much deeper than today's offering, though it is rather beautiful to look down through all the woods and see white on black, brown and grey. We've only got an inch or so on the ground here so you can still see some grass poking up. I think that might be all we get today and the sun will be out tomorrow so it will be gone in a jiffy.
I get excited at snow flurries, but that's probably because of our lack of them. I bet it sure does look pretty though

I LOVE FF! So do they. Lol
I'm 3 weeks into CX chicks and on 1st bag still, yay! Lol
It's easy for them to eat and helps their systems stay in top order, chickens usually *know* what they want/need to feel good...better digestion, poos, easier egg laying and probably much more tasty than a dry pellet.
My 5 year old said its like cereal lol add milk its Yummy! No milk too crunchy!

I woke up at 5:00 this morning and couldn't remember if I took my phone to bed with me. (I have a family member in the hospital so I was in a mild panic to find it.) Couldn't find it so got up and searched the house, couldn't find it so I went and searched the car, couldn't find it soooo went with a flashlight and searched around the yard and three coops/runs! It was dark, cold, wind blowing and snow flurries AND I wasn't amused! LOL Oh, I went back and tore all the covers off my bed just in case, somehow it was under my sheets and I slept on it all night. LOL When I was searching the coop with my older birds my dog slipped in the door when I went in. As I was locking the door behind me I notice something BIG in there on the other side of the door looking at me. I almost locked the chicken killing dog IN the coop with the chickens! Ohhh not a good thought! LOL One time he followed me in the basement and was locked in there for a day or two. I couldn't find him anywhere them heard him whining. Ahhhh (sigh) that dog.

On one hand, I'm SO jealous of the cold, snow and fires. But then again, I get to go sit on my back porch in a t-shirt and watch my green grass grow, my rabbits forage and hear the flocking clicking in their run. We have a few more weeks to be fire-friendly.

Yes, my flock are a bunch of addicts, too. By the time they are done, they look like they swallowed an ostrich egg! I am just starting to grow a pasture mix in my yard, though, so they should be mighty happy to be free in a few more weeks.

Its a cold 27 degrees here with about 6 inches of snow, the sun was just out and it looks so pretty on the snow.

After coming out for some scratch earlier girls are back in the coop. Stella the BR is not impressed with the cold it seems. She is all poofed up telling me she is not impressed. It is kind of funny to see her breath come out so you can see it, I am sure they will venture out once they realize I put suet out in run for them. Or later when I feed them outside.

Quote: Most of mine free range, with a few losses. I live next to a preserve for hunters and the animals. Lots of coyote, fox, and hawks. The old owl is still out there as we hear h im or her now and then. A raccoon has been killing off some of my birds at night. Even opens sliding pop doors. I screw them shut at night now. ANd EVERY bird is cooped at night. We try to catch up the turkeys before they roost 10-15 feet up in the trees. I figure a raccon can climb the tree and get a bird that way. GUess I need to hurry up and put more in the freezer asap.
